Blacks to Lead Powerful Committees If Democrats Gain
WASHINGTON, D.C. – If the Democrats win the majority of seats in the House of Representatives in November, some members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) could become chair of powerful committees.
Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the lead Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, would become head of the powerful committee. As chairman, Conyers could order hearings and issue subpoenas to Bush administration officials regarding misconduct issues and management of the federal judiciary.
Conyers also would deal with issues such as Justice Department investigations, property rights, copyright matters, immigration, voting rights, civil and human rights.
Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, would become its chair. The Ways and Means Committee is considered a plum assignment, because it writes the tax laws for the country.
