Forum on Why to Lock More Oakland Youth in Cages

by Education Not Incarceration
Oakland Citycouncilwoman Jane Brunner and Councilman Larry Reid
are planning a forum to address this issue of "youth
criminal activity", asking "Does it seem to you that when young
people are picked up for illegal activity, they
are back on the streets within hours? Are young people
treated less seriously by the police and the criminal
justice system?"

Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: City Council Chambers, Oakland City Hall

This forum has no youth speakers and is focussed on
asking for youth to be locked up for more time
and for more police to lock up more youth. Read their
statement below.

We really need to turn out for this!!

to let them know that:
1. We will not tolerate the attitude that youth should be
locked up. We demand more programming for Oakland's youth,
including acountability for the 2.4 million dollars missing
from the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth.
2. We demand youth voices on the forum and speakers from
a perspective that youth need opportunities, not incarceration.

Do you wonder why young people are involved in
criminal activity? Does it seem to you that when young
people are picked up for illegal activity, they
are back on the streets within hours? Are young people
treated less seriously by the police and the criminal
justice system?

Please join Councilmembers Jane Brunner and Larry Reid
to address these questions at Oakland Youth in the
Criminal Justice System, a forum that
will focus on preventing youth criminal activity in
Oakland neighborhoods.

We know there are many reasons for this problem, from
a lack of police resources to an overloaded judicial
system. We want to discuss what is working in our
judicial system, what needs to change, and how youth
involved in criminal activity can get help. City
Hall is located a half-a-block off Broadway on 14th
Street in downtown Oakland. If you have any
questions or would like any further information,
please contact Councilmember Brunner's office at
238-7001.
