Anglo students attack migrant youth in Vacaville
High bathroom, reports Mig Ed staffer
Ms. Luz Cardona, a Migrant Education youth counselor
at Vaca High in Vacaville, reported this week that
sometime on Friday (June 2) afternoon a 16 year-old
migrant youth was beaten while in the bathroom
severely enough to be attended by a physician, by some
six anglo youths.
“So far, little action has been taken by school
officials,” said Ms. Cardona.” The youth’s mother is
asking for legal advice on the matter.”
According to initial reports from Ms. Cardona and
other Migrant Education personnel at the high school
indicate that the teenager was inside a bathroom on
the Vaca H.S. campus when a sole student begin to
shoot a water pistol at him.
“Our student told the water gun user to stop it and
the student then asked him what if he didn’t,” said
Ms. Cardona. “When challenged to a fight, the Latino
youth agreed to accept the challenge, but at that
moment, some five other students appeared, locking the
door behind them.”
The attack on the migrant youth was uncalled for,
Migrant Education personnel said. The principal o the
high school allegedly disciplined only the senior
class member of the ambush group by denying him the
right to receive his diploma at graduation exercises
later this week,
“He has become a cause celebrate,” said Ms. Cardona.
“Many of his classmates are sporting T-shirts urging
the Vaca faculty and administration to reinstate him
as a bona-fide senior class member and be granted the
right to walk across the stage for his diploma.
According to Ms. Cardona, the limited action didn’t
exactly please the youth’s family, who feel that a
more severe type of punishment should be rendered to
the entire group.
“They feel that the lack of school action has led
them to seek legal advice,” said Ms. Cardona. “Can you
imagine if the altercation had the Latinos attacking a
lone
anglo student?”
Yes, Ms. Cardona, most of us can.
