Support Update 3/6/06
Eric McDavid Still Without Vegan Food
For More Information, please contact info [at] supporteric.org

On March 2 we learned that Eric McDavid (x-ref #2972521) has decided he will no longer purchase food from the commissary to supplement his diet. It is the jail's responsibility to provide inmates with the proper nutrition - THEY need to provide him with protein. What he buys from the commissary is already barely enough to live on. After nearly 2 months of incarceration and constant requests by Eric, his lawyer, friends, family and people all over the world, the jail has still refused to comply with Eric's request for a vegan diet. Without the protein sources from the commissary (peanuts, peanut butter, and refried beans), Eric will no longer be getting ANY protein in his diet. The only food he receives from the jail that he can eat is frozen fruit and bread. Occasionally they bring him vegetables, but these are usually cooked in butter, making it impossible for him to eat them. He has already stopped exercising due to loss of energy and lethargy.

The deterioration of his health will quickly accelerate now that he no longer has any protein sources. We really need everyone to call the jail and inquire about the protein shakes that the jail nutritionist recommended for Eric over two weeks ago. Though these shakes are necessary for Eric’s health, the request was denied by the jail doctor. When contacting the jail insist that he receive the protein shakes. You should also make the general request that he be given VEGAN meals. When talking to the jail, you should know that Eric has informed the jail he will NOT communicate with them about these issues. To avoid confusion and miscommunication, he has requested that all of their inquiries about his food be directed to his lawyer. If the person on the other end of the phone line says they talked to Eric (and, of course, they always say he's fine!), you should know that the jail is lying to you. Please take the time to make this quick phone call - Eric's health depends on our persistence in this matter.
