Excavate the landfill ... and then let’s talk!

“The Navy has yet to put forward a formal plan for cleaning up or removing the landfill. Navy officials have said they are considering creating a permanent cap and leaving the landfill in place. Any plan would require EPA approval, which is not likely in the immediate future. The EPA has not taken a position on the landfill,” says Michael Work, one of the project mangers for the Hunters Point Shipyard Superfund cleanup.
“The EPA has been very clear about the fact that we don’t see this cap as a final action. There’s a lot of nervousness inside the community about the landfill. There have been fires, and residents are fearful that something might happen again like what happened in August 2000. Once upon a time, in 2002, the construction of new homes near the Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato, Calif., came to a screeching halt after methane gas and toxic chemicals were discovered seeping from a neglected landfill on the former military base.
