Green Bloggers Meet

by Carl Macki (carlmacki [at] yahoo.com)
P0st on recent Commonwealth Club meeting of environmental blogger hosted by Gil Friend on 1/31/06. Event to be possibly broadcast on KQED-FM
First this from sustainablog-- "Finally, a quick congrats to several friends of sustainablog that gathered at San Francisco's Commonwealth Club to discuss "green blogging": Kyeann Sayer from Treehugger, Siel from GreenLAGirl, Jamais Cascio from WorldChanging, Nick Aster from TriplePundit, Gil Friend, and Eric Corey Fried participated in a panel discussion, and Nick reports it was a resounding success. Love to hear responses from anyone who attended, and will definitely be fitting the podcast of the event (forthcoming) into my schedule." A quick view of the event--Although arriving late and completely missing the reception, I was able to feel comfortable in the mix of conversation in which I found myself. Gil Friend fielded both questions from the audience both vocally and written down. One of the issues discussed was the future of blogging. All of the panelists seemed to agree that blogging would become more and more user defined, going beyond the simple comment to something more involved, although how and what was not clear in my mind. (Perhaps others may have a clearer view of the proceeding.) Alex Steffan from worldchanging wasn't there; his place was filled by Jamais Casein--hope I got that right!--who stated that blogging had become part of his identity -- maybe I took that to mean that his life would be empty without it. I liked that. It was so bittersweet with hopeful pathos. Dana, the co-founder of Skyside, commented to me later that he seemed to gravitate towards the presentation of Kyeann Sager, from treehugger.com, subbing for Graham Hill. That seemed to make sense, treehugger.com after all, wrote about our solar-powered cube table light (or lighted cube table) way back--it seems so long ago--over a year ago. When asked about hits--the number of visits to the blogsite--treehugger far outstripped the others -- measuring theirs in the million plus per month. Incidentally. the original "treehuggers" came the North Country of India --Uttarakhand or Uttaranchal-- where the Chipko Movement, led often by women and practitioners of satyagraha (a term for passive resistance) protested the logging in that part of India --traditionally deemed "the abode of the gods" (see Wikipedia) -- by grappling the trunks of trees about to be harvested. Chipko in Sanskrit means "embrace;" hence the jump in meaning to hugger. And its embrace in the rest of the world to describe environmentalists who protested logging in general. A representative from Presidio School of Management in SF spoke about their Sustainable Management program, which we were interested in exploring, especially since we are already working with the New College's Green MBA program. They were co-sponsors of the event. We did not meet the "organic architect" Eric Corey Freed, another sponsor. Oh, well.
