HELP FOR FAMILIES WHO ARE LOOKING FOR THEIR LOST KATRINA PETS

If you lost your pet or pets during Hurricane Katrina or Rita, please go to these web addresses where you can click on searches that will automatically search for Katrina Cats and Dogs if they have been listed correctly under their descriptions. You can search by breed and by color.

Cats are listed by breed. Cats are also listed by color where you can search for domestic, tabby, or all cats.
The most common cats that most people have are domestic cats, or tabby cats.

Dogs are listed by breed. Every dog breed for found dogs on Petfinder should soon be here. You can search for Pit Bull dogs, and Chow Chow dogs by color.

* Please try to do your own searches using these lists.
* If you need help with using a computer, Please ask someone at a public library, school, office, church or Red Cross to help you. It is difficult for someone who does not know your pet to look for them. It takes someone who does not know your pet hours to check and they would have to compare markings. It is better for you to look through the photographs yourself (even if you get help using the computer) because you are more likely to recognize your own pet.

Address information on Petfinder and Petharbor is often incorrect, so please go by the description of your pet. Sometimes the gender is not listed, or listed incorrectly, so you may want to search without gender. The colors in photographs can look very different, or someone in an office may describe your pet from its record but may never have seen your pet. Animals may have been altered or microchipped after katrina., and shelters have sometimes given them names that are not their real name. Pets can look different if their weight has changed or they have been groomed. Look through photographs, and if you see an animal matching the description of yours that does not have a photo on that record, please email the record through the Petfinder email message system. If you tihink a pet is yours, you should also call the phone number on the record.

You can also see on Best Friends web site how they have been able to humanely decrease the number of homeless pets and how they are trying to prevent 6 million healthy homeless pets being euthanized in America every year. These pets would be adopted if people were responsible and would stop overpopulation through spay and neuter, which would give homeless companion animals a home. For every person born there are 45 cats and 15 dogs, which is why humane control of the pet population is so important. Please only adopt from shelters and rescue groups, these pets are as nice as pets bought from breeders and pet shops. Do not buy from breeders or pet shops because they are encouraging overpopulation. There are lots of beautiful mutts and pedigrees (a third of shelter pets are pedigree) that need adopting.
