Mills College Students Staging Sit-In as Board of Trustees Meets
Mills College students with a long list of grievances are at this moment staging a sit-in at the library as the Board of Trustees meets inside.
Students Committed to Change through Direct Action, dressed in black with blue tape over their mouths to symbolize their voices not being heard on campus,.are protesting the Mills College administration today.
Students' concerns include favorite faculty and staff who have been let go in the past year, ongoing complaints with diversity and lack of accessibility for disabled students, and an administration which is not accountable to students. Many students at the Oakland women's college are not happy with the performance of college president Janet Holmgren.
Students are presenting a long list of demands, including that the college permanenty fill empty faculty and staff positions, hire more faculty of color, address accessibility problems, implement a new discrimination policy, support students with children, improve shuttle service, stop budget cuts, and put in place a process to hear feedback and evaluations from students. They say they will continue the sit-in until the Board of Trustees finishes its meeting and is forced to step through the protesting students.
