Equality California: 12 Days of Equality- Day 7
Equality California: 12 Days of Equality
Day 7: What We Teach Our Children
September 18, 2005
In a unanimous California Supreme Court decision last month, Justice Carlos Moreno
wrote, "We perceive no reason why both parents of a child cannot be women."
This groundbreaking ruling made it clear that families headed by same-sex couples
--especially children in those families-- deserve the same protections and rights as
any other family.
Governor Schwarzenegger and First Lady Shriver, who have four children, probably
cannot imagine the fear that families with same-sex parents face when traveling or
making the tough everyday choices a parent must decide.
First Lady Maria Shriver has been a champion for California's women and children. At
her website, http://www.firstlady.ca.gov (http://www.firstlady.ca.gov/) , she makes it
clear she values her family and wants to "bring respect and recognition to the
extraordinary job of motherhood and parenting . . . to raise awareness of issues
that affect our families and our children."
Read today's message (http://www.eqca.org/message7) from parent Megan Smith, who
thinks about what Governor Schwarzenegger's threatened veto teaches our children.
Take today's action (http://www.eqca.org/action7): Please write to California's
First Lady asking her to be an advocate for our families too. If you are a parent,
please focus your remarks from one parent to another.
