Counter Recruiting march in Fresno
About 50 people march in Fresno from the Fresno Unified School District offices to a military recruiting office. They march to bring attention to the option to "Opt Out" from the lists of recruiters on K to 12 campuses.
Central Valley Counter-Recruitment Coalition (which organized todays march) is a new group which started in May of 2005. It is a coaltion of local progressive individuals, groups, and churches. Currently the groups include Peace Fresno, Fresno Center for Nonviolence, WILPF, and RANCOR. Churches include Unitarian Universalist Church, First Congregational Church, Community Mennonite and College Community Mennonite, Wesley United Methodist, and Fresno Friends.
Our mission is to highlight the evil of militarism, oppose the militarization of our society in general, and high schools & college campuses in specific. Our actions consist of going to high school and college campuses to distribute literature, especially when the military recruiters are present. Our literature is to expose the lies of the military recruiters around their empty promises. Another focus of CVCRC is to educate students and their families about their right to OPT-OUT from having their name, address and phone number released to the military recruiters.
The next meeting is Saturday October 1st at the Fresno Center for Nonviolence. The time is 10:00am to noon. The address is 1584 N. Van Ness at the corner of McKinley, near Fresno City College. For more information call 432-3445.
