Gwen Araujo Trial Update- Go This Afternoon!

by from Tami
(written on tuesday)
closing statements in the Araujo re-trial will begin tomorrow, 8/24, at
1:30 p.m. They will undoubtedly continue throughout the day on
Thursday, and possibly conclude Monday a.m. -- the case will then go to
the jury.
Gang,

Court was cancelled today due to William DuBois (lawyer for Jose Merel)
having an absessed tooth. Because of this, everything that was planned
for today (closed-door jury instructions this morning, and the start of
closing arguments in the afternoon) was delayed one day.

So...

closing statements in the Araujo re-trial will begin tomorrow, 8/24, at
1:30 p.m. They will undoubtedly continue throughout the day on
Thursday, and possibly conclude Monday a.m. -- the case will then go to
the jury.

If you can, please show up at the court. I've said that before, but
this will likely be your last chance before the end of the trial for
you to show your support. I also know that the family of Gwen Araujo,
in particular, would like to see as many folks there to provide support
as possible.

The trial is being held at the Hayward Hall of Justice, 24405 Amador
St., Hayward. There is a sizable parking garage just across the
street. From SF, take 880 south, exit Winton, then turn right at
Amador. From BART, take the Fremont line, exit at Hayward, then hop a
92 (Chabot College) bus. Exit at Amador. The courtroom is on the
second floor, Department #510.

There can be no good coming out of this trial. If the unlikely occurs, that is all 3 idiots who played around with the 4th idiot at a sex party, proving to the world that all 4 were not living productive lifestyles at all, are convicted and sent to prison, there would be no justice. What we would have is a huge tax bill for the 2 trials, and an even larger tax bill for the punishment, not rehabilitation, of the 3 idiots in prison.

No one who claims to be any kind of progressive or a serious supporter of gay liberation can be for sending the 3 idiots to prison for anytime, or for the death penalty. All serious progressive people are abolitionists: We are for abolishing the death penalty and prisons. We are for rehabilitation and education for decent paying jobs. We are for teaching people how to live worthwhile, productive, culturally enriching lives.

More likely, either we will have another hung jury, thus returning the 3 idiots to their original status, innocent until proven guilty, or some of the idiots will be convicted and sent to prison to rot, be tortured or perhaps die horribly in the American prison-concentration camp system. Of course, those found guilty will appeal the conviction, and from what we all have read, it is clear that the primary problem with the whole sorry group is their stupidity mixed with unproductive lifestyles. There are certainly lots of appealable grounds already, just from reading the rhetoric of the prosecutor, which was obviously filled with lies.

It is terrible that one person died and it is equally terrible that people have negative attitudes toward gay, transgender and transsexual people. That can only change through (a) the elimination of proverty, and (b) education, both of which require a serious labor movement. Wasting our tax dollars with these trials only takes money away from needed social services and education programs and serve only to advance the careers of the district attorneys, whose moniker is "sending poor people to jail."
