Ask Barry Zito to Enlist

by Jack
Bay Area residents are asking Oakland Athletics chickenhawk Barry Zito to enlist in the Army.
Barry Zito has been an outspoken advocate of the war in Iraq, and a group of Oakland residents think it's time for him to enlist in the United States Army.

Zito is one of the worst of a new breed of chickenhawk, a twenty seven year old male who donates money to George Bush, is a self-proclaimed "patriot", yet stands on the sidelines and allows others to fight and die in his war.

He throws C notes through his foundation at returning veterans with lost limbs, burned bodies, and broken lives, as though his money enables him to call himself a patriot and make his millions playing a game while others die. It's time to call this hypocrite out on his cowardice.

We will be appearing at Zito's starts at the Oakland Coliseum, and will begin by leafletting the stands and dropping enlistment forms in the A's dugout. Further demonstrations will follow. For updates on Zito's scheduled appearances at the Coliseum, please see http://enlistbarry.blogspot.com.

You're going to bash this guy at an A's game? I hope you have paid health care and life insurance.

considering how wimpy ballplayers are im surprised atrthis zito character

To Pea-brain Steve-- Probably a majority of A's fans agree-- Zito should sign up or shut up. Last I checked about 80-90% of Oakland was against the war, which I imagine includes a lot of baseball fans. Actually you should shut the fuck up.

put this laudable energy into encouraging others not to enlist, thereby impairing the military's ability to perpetuate the occupation?

unless, you already are

but, if this is what you have your heart set on doing, good luck, and "be careful out there"

Barry Zito isn't the only athlete or celebrity to donate money to Bush or the Republicans. You people are so narrow minded. Bothering Barry Zito isn't going to stop the war. The guy is a ball player, not a politician. Don't waste your time. Let the man pitch. We live in a nation that gives him the right to give his money to whoever the hell he wants to. You idiots want to protest him just because you don't agree with him. Since when does supporting the men and womwn in the military mean you actively support the war. Stop making things up as you go,

The same people who tell us not to preach yto the choir, also tell us when we go places wherre their is a non-choir like aduience that we will be beat up. (The A's games include a lot of non-Oakalnders i.e. people from the suburbs.)
In reality, these people like the ubiquitous Steve jsut don't want us to "preach" at all.

I have not heard that Zito supports and/or donates to Bush, and I've followed this story pretty closely. Please provide some substantiation. Zito has something of a free-thinking reputation and is the son of reasonably prominent Hollywood liberals...not that these prove anything, but nor does helping injured war veterans prove support for the war (much less support for the Prez).

Go to opensecrets.org - in the left margin, under "look up individual doners" 2004 cycle, type in Zito, Barry. Click on GO, and you'll find his $2,000 donation to Bush last year.

He pals around with Oliver North and appears regularly on FNC with his friend Sean Hannity. He's not only a Republican, but he's an ultra-conservative one.

you morons. zito is not supporting the war. he's supporting the troops who've fought in it and have returned home with little or no money. further, why would you ask another being to something you wouldn't do yourselves? i.e., why would you ask barry to enlist if you're not willing to enlist yourself? it's the logic of hypocrite. it's the reasoning of an ignorant. sure, showing up at the coliseum with enlistment forms will be theatric. but more than embarrassing zito, you'll call worldwide attention to your own idiocy.
by Jack
Why have the troops returned with "little or no money"? Is it because of the Republican VA cuts? Or because our military recruiters target the poor out of proportion to the rest of the population?

Why shouldn't a rich guy like Zito serve in a war he supports? Or should only poor people fight in it?
by tadjelly
i dunno, jack. seems to me zito makes his money and sees fit to donate it to the very "poor people" that you say are being forced to fight the war. question: why does that bother you?
by tadjelly
so, some of us returned to town monday and guess what? we didn't hear one snippet of any "protest" against zito. not a peep. does that mean a) alleged "protesters" failed to show some follow-through after all their big talk? b) those who once considered protesting zito thought better of it after they thought it through? c) protesters arrived, made grand statement, but "big media" failed to report it because, after all, "big media" is in cahoots with the bush administration and other dark forces?
anyone? i come here for knowledge. please, gimme a hand.

Look, Barry Zito can donate money to whoever he wants, President Bush included. We're sitting in the middle of America for christ sake--let the man do what he wants. He should be able to support the war in whatever legal way he wants, as you should be allowed to protest the war in any leagal way you want.
