So how does setting fire to Hummers protect the environment and the earth? I am opposed to Jeffrey's so-called "action" and others who go out and destroy and burn under the banner of Eco-defender. i think you lack the committment for real environmental activism. go to the Sierra's or Oregon's Cascadia's and join the tree sitters or blockade a road used by logging trucks or hell do something completely useless like lobby your Congressmen and women. Did his "action" do anything to bring about legislation against Hummers and SUV's, no. Does burning down houses and apartment do anything to stem the tide of destruction in our forests, in fact, it does just the opposite. Every time you destroy you cause the lumber companies to cut down even more of our forests. F--king stop it!

Is generally the same logic that is used to justify civil disobedience actions, Earth First! monkey wrenching, and other such actions.

It denys the corporations the ability to reap profits because of the destroyed SUV's, and it also creates dialog and awareness around the issue that is being created through direct action.

Such actions like Jeff's aren't supposed to be seen as "the" solution, but one of many tactics that must be imployed in order to see real fundamental change.

Jeff Luers worked for the Sierra Club for a number of years, and later quit after feeling that "real environmental activism" needed to move beyond reform, and also involve things like blockades, and tree sits. Jeff was one of the first tree sitters to defend certain areas of northeast wilderness.

He later decided that he had to do more, to under take a non-violent action that invovled arson to raise the bar of resistance to start people talking on global warming.

Then we might as well stop talking on the computer because it's causing electricity to be wasted.

No one singal action will change the world. It's about creating a strong social movement that will eventually lead to the abolition of the existing system, and militant direct action is a part of that. Not everyone should and can play the role of the underground eco-warrior, but those of us on the other end need to at least support those that are willing to stand up and resist the system in a way that it understands, but attacking it economically.

The location of the event has changed last minute to 629 15th St. about a block away from the original location. All other specifics remain the same.

all you become if you choose to pursue this route are petty vandals and arsonists destroying what we all hold dear. don't you have the committment to join the "Roadless Summer" activists in Indiana and Kentucky? If i have received their requests for support then so have you i am certain. The Sierra Nevedas will be looking for tree-sitters in the coming months too due to Bush's reversal of the Clinton bill preserving approx. 58,000 acres of old growth forests there. Why do you not go join the eco-activists up there? Many of them are well into their 70's and still putting there lives and freedom on the lines to save the forests from being mulched into toilet papers and tooth picks. I know many of them personally and know agree that burning shit up is an effective way yo get your message across to other people about the effects of deforestation. The SUV luers burned were all resold so the his "action" and i shutter to even call it that had a negative net effect. He f-ked my breathing air and that of my friends, lovers, etc. by torching these SUV's AND they were rehabed and sold. Nothing changed except that he further polluted an already fragile eco-system.
