Wal-Mart is leading the "Race to the Bottom" in cities around the country and now they are bringing their destructive presence to "East Oakland" with a new store set to open in April 2005. Simeon Developers received subsidies from public funds to get them here in a deal that had no public participation or input. Since the community did not get a chance to learn about this development before it was approved, we need to come together and educate ourselves now on the impact that Wal-Mart will have on our community.
We demand that the developers, Simeon Developers, share profits with the community to support job training, youth scholarships and funding for clinics in the area to offset some of the negative impacts that Wal-Mart will have on our community.
