Republicans To Harass Ohio Votes INSIDE Polling Places

by sources
TThe Republican Party has announced plans to place thousands of election challengers in Ohio polling places next week. It says it is only trying to prevent fraud. But there is a real danger that these challengers could be used to block eligible voters from casting their ballots or, just as bad, to drastically slow down voting in some parts of the state. Election officials must be vigilant about ensuring that partisan challengers do not disrupt the voting.

Voters who are challenged will be asked to fill out a two-page form stating their name, if they are a U.S. citizen, where they were born, if they have resided in the state 30 days, the names of two persons who know where they live, the county and precinct in which they live, and if they are of legal voting age.

The bottom of the form contains the following warning in bold type: "Whoever commits election falsification is guilty of a felony of the fifth degree."

Mike King, chairman of the Licking County Board of Elections and chairman of the Licking County Democratic Party, was pleased the Democrats did not file and furious the Republicans have decided to have challengers.

"I've never seen anything so tacky, to try and intimidate people," King said. "It's a slap in the Board of Elections' face, a slap in the poll worker's face, a slap in the voter's face. It's a slap at everybody.

But 2004 is shaping up to be something special. Take Ohio ... please. There the Republican Party says it has recruited more than 3,500 people to "monitor" the election - particularly in heavily Democratic areas of the state. The monitors will be able to challenge voters on one of four criteria: citizenship, age, county residency, and whether the potential voter has lived in Ohio for the past 30 days.

Observers say the checkers may intimidate voters, or at least slow down the process so that people leave the queues rather than stay and vote.
