California Bans Foie Gras
SB1520 - Foie Gras Ban becomes law of the land (in 2012)
9/30/04: Gov. Schwarzenegger has signed the historic bill to ban the production and sale of foie gras in the state of California. The bill makes the practice of force-feeding ducks and geese illegal by 2012, and also bans the sale of the cruel product. While some hope that the extended time before the law is to take effect will allow producers to find alternate methods to overfeed fowl, most do not see this as feasible and believe foie gras will eventually fade from tables in California and surrounding states. This could be history in the making — though several countries around the world have banned force-feeding fowl, this is the first time this type of legislation has made it this far in the U.S. Paul McCartney and other celebrities have lobbied the governor to sign the bill.
