M20 breakaway series: #5 of 5: MISSING LINK

5 of 5: Missing Link in Sidewalk Police Rush (re: video #1 "Cops riot on Market St.")... 2.5 min

Here is the video that shows what precipitated the cops rushing the sidewalk on Market Street. One protester was taunting the police with a broken broomstick from behind the seeming security of other protesters. The two cops he was provoking kept knocking the broomstick away with their batons but the protester persisted. Officer #873 swooped in from the side and and tried to grab either the stick or the protester or both. A second after that cop chased the stick-wielding protester onto the sidewalk, a rush of cops followed #873 into the crowd and began swinging their batons wildly at almost anything that moved, suggesting they were not even aware of what #873 was doing. The swarm of cops made a "U" through the crowd returning to the street about 20 yards east of original lunge. You can see the start and tail-end of the action in video #1 "Cops riot on Market St." from another perspective in this video. (see M20 photo group #11 for more from this perspective.)

Not sure if the stick man was captured by the cops. Probably not. Hopefully no one was seriously injured here.

In the first half of this segment, a lone male with blue hood, just below the camera, breaks free of a single line of cops surrounding arrestees-to-be. Just after that, toward the right, the cops let a mohawked female go for some reason -- she had been holding her mouth, so maybe she was hurt in the face or maybe the pre-arrest anxiety had made her nauseous. At the end of this piece, you see the second line of re-inforcements come in, and there will be no more escapes after that. (see M20 photo group #11 for two females who escaped.)

about a block down Market was as far as this first, largest edition of the breakaway made it, fortunately (because it was so public) and unfortunately (because the longer the march the merrier)

... includes a brief appearance by Bikes Not Bombs contingent, and you get an idea of the mellower, less violent, but more vibrant, feel of this year's breakway. Having the Infernal Noise Brigade participate never hurts either (see video #4 in series).
