We Will Not Allow Our University to Support Racism, Ethnic Cleansing and Apartheid
REMEMBER DEIR YASSIN AND DIVEST FROM ISRAEL!
April 9th, NOON
Dwinelle Plaza on the UC Berkeley Campus
Near Sather Gate and Wheeler Hall
Early in the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun (headed by Menachem Begin) and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin, a village with about 750 Palestinian residents killing 100s of men, women and children. Though the village lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State it was located on strategic high ground and was slated for occupation under Plan Dalet and the mainstream Jewish defense force.
Deir Yassin stands as an early instance of the calculated depopulation of over 400 Arab villages and cities and the expulsion of over 700,000 Palestinian inhabitants. It is a stark symbol of the racism of behind the ethnically defined state of Israel and the violence that this has engendered, continuing to manifest to today. In the spirit of the South African anti-apartheid movement we call on the University to divest from Israel by selling off its over $7 billion of holdings in companies that do business in Israel.
We ask all students and concerned citizens to join us for an afternoon of creative direct action in support of freedom, justice and divestment from Israel.
