UC Davis Student Senate Comes Out Against Kevin Cooper's Execution
With the execution of death row inmate Kevin Cooper scheduled for Tuesday, the ASUCD Senate passed an urgent resolution supporting the Save Kevin Cooper campaign at Thursday's meeting.
Cooper, who has been on California's death row for 18 years, was convicted of the murder of three members of the Ryen family and a houseguest in 1985. He was denied clemency by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Jan. 30.
Cooper's case, dubbed by some as "a case full of holes," elicited concerns regarding California's capital punishment system, and raised issues of racism, poverty and police misconduct.
