Oakland 'Riders' Verdict - potential civil unrest

by repost
"You can only hold so many candlelight vigils before another reaction occurs," said David Glover, executive director of Oakland Citizens Committee for Urban Renewal.
Verdict for 'Riders' expected
City officials worry about civil unrest
Chip Johnson Monday, September 15, 2003

A jury that has deliberated since the end of May and sent 58 notes to the judge is enough to make any prosecutor sweat.

Now the heat is really on.

In what could be the final week of the corruption trial of three former Oakland police officers accused of beating suspects, planting evidence and covering up their crimes, city officials are hoping for the best -- but preparing for the worst.

"In the event of an acquittal, my gut feeling tells me, 'No, there won't be any trouble,' but it's something I'm concerned about," Police Chief Richard Word said Friday.

Word has met with leaders of Oakland's religious community to secure their help in the event of street mayhem, and he says that police response to any reports of trouble will be carefully measured.

"The last thing we want to do is ignite or inflame an incident," he said.

That's good policy, because the department's back-up plan includes calling for mutual aid, if needed, from the California Highway Patrol, the Alameda County Sheriff's Department and nearby cities.

Once again, the "black community" is threatening Oakland with a riot. It seems that every time the "black community" does not get it's way there is a riot which ends with the "black community" having their neighborhood burned down. I don't really care, but rest assured that if it gets burned down there will be NO money to rebuild it. They'll just have to live in the rubble. We learned our lesson from the Rodney King Riots. You burn it down and then demand we rebuild. Never again.

If there's a riot and someone attacks people just for being middle-class, that's no better than the riders attacking people for being poor. In which case, the rioters and the cops deserve each other.

Here's a crazy idea - if you're angry at the cops, why not attack them and leave the fucking innocent bystanders (even if they are shit-talking racist motherfuckers) out of this?

I'll tell you why - because cops are armed and dangerous, and some well-to-do white yuppy in a loft is an easy target.

I'll tell you why - because you're a coward who just wants to vent jealousy and frustration. You're not a rebel, you're just a punk.

The LA Riots were as bullshit as the verdict that set them off. They took a legitimate cause and honored it with random violence, random theft, and MORE RACISM.

Quit thinking like animals.
by guy
actually... the violence and property distruction during the LA riots were anything but random, and people DID NOT burn down their own neighborhoods.

most of the property damage was to asian owned businesses.

next time get the facts before you rattle off.
by Lamar in oakland
and people DID NOT burn down their own neighborhoods.

Ahh.......here we go with the same old B.S. that the la riots are some kind of social statement.

A BAD EXCUSE FOR "CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR" ON THE PART OF THIS GROUP
but what else have we come to expect from oakland
( the arm pit of the bay area!)
by joyce
What does Jerry Brown intend to do about this?
is he even in the city, or did he leave already?

where is the city councle?
by just wondering
If you don't like Oakland, why do you live there? You do live there, don't you? Or are you just another jive troll, talking out his butt abvout stuff he don;t know about?
by Lamar in oakland
yes I have lived in Oakland long enough to see it way back when it was a nice place to live. And people could say they where from Oakland with out being embarrassed of it.
just because a few buildings get a face lift does not change the fact that this town is an arm pit!
the decent residents are leaving and being replaced by scum.

(ps adopting a hip hop typing style does not fool any one into thinking you are black, you are just another scared little "boy" trying to be cool )
by aaron
Lamar, you sound like a cop to me.

Nessie, Pinole is hardly an upper-middle class white/asian enclave, as you suggest. It's about as multi-racial as could be (white, latino, asian, black) and more accurately described as "middling" working class. BTW, do you have any proof of street actions there after the Rodney King verdict? I'd be interested.
by al
if you want to insight a riot do it in your own city! or shut -up!
by Fred
Yes Aaron, stay on this side of the bay.
by aaron
i'll stay on "my" side of the bay (with your mom).
by aaron
yea, i've worked out in Pinole and it's definitely very mixed racially, an example of how "inner-ring" suburbs no longer conform to the stereotype of white bread affluence and placidity. while cities like SF, Seattle, Boston, Denver, much of NYC (etc) have undergone massive gentrification in the past twenty years, suburbs like Pinole have been recomposed pretty dramatically, both racially and economically. quite a few "inner-ring" suburbs have seen a fairly high degree of disinvestment, but unlike the above-mentioned cities don't have the charming old houses, waterfront views, and other amenities to woo capital back. pinole isn't a severe case but it's in that "league".

anyway, i wasn't meaning to suggest that you were lying about post-rodney actions in Pinole; i was just curious to know more.

"Riders" off the street------Murder rate skyrockets.....Hmmmm
Funny how that works....LOL
by please
Another idiot.
by jerome
I wonder what our savior "Jerry Brown" has planned to safeguard the public? he has not done a lot about getting the murder rate down.
what will jerry do with a full blown riot?
by John Q Public
Why would there be a riot? Who would riot? If for some strange reason there was, he would probably handle it like the docks, in which case is would be short and only the criminals would get hurt....LOL
by JERRY'S POSSE
then this could be a good thing for oakland, getting all the scum off the streets in one swoop! Jerry may be on to some thing!

by aaron
Whenever there's an article about the police in predominately black and brown neighborhoods on indymedia, "Lamar" or "Tyrone" or "Jerome" suddenly appear singing the cops' praises.

They're all the same pathetic WHITE racist jerk-off, i'm sure of it.
by identia
What if a posse of black police officers drove into your white middleclass or upscale neighborhood and started to jack up your children, put them under a curfew, frisked your fathers, grandfathers, sons, daughter, wifes and mothers, busted you, framed you and beat you up, assumed you were all white collar
criminals and had it coming to you or worse outlawed your culture so that cigars, cigarettes, and possession of alcohol, a tobacco were felonies. Imagine being harressed every time you left your homes and when
you were in your homes you were often searched
without cause or warrant?
Let's be realistic for a moment. The black community
has never been wanted by whites. At best it is tolerated. Integration is anathema. The really is an unspoken war against blacks in america. Their vices
are classified as crimes, their habits, culture, mannerisms, speech is rediculed and frowned upon.
The men are imprisoned, used by the mililtary, or appreciated for their entertainment value ie. sports, music, film etc.
There is no large conspiracy by whites to enslave blacks quite the contrary but the entire dilemna is a result of slavery which can't be fixed. We have to live with the consequences of our history but that dosn't mean we have to be indifferent, hostile or negative.
Blacks and whites can benifit from mutual association but first their must be respect. Until your ready to respect a person for what he is and what he believes without contradicting him or condemning him or criminalizing him, until you allow a person freedom,
freedom to choose, make chooses whether their acceptable to you or not.... untill you stop waging war
upon behavior... we will have conflict and discord.
Even with tolerance and forebearance their will be conflict and discord but at least it won't be compounded by fascism.
The American Indian didn't fare well in their interaction with the North Amercian whites. The blacks have fared better by contrast but to blame them for being who and what they are, to castigate them because they don't act white well you will meet resistence. Why be surprised. What mankind really needs to learn is how to respect the individual and the individuals rights. They must be preserved as sacred and inalienable. This is where the Oakland Police failed. They condemned the downtrodden, the poor,
the weak, the miserable and then they preyed upon them. What a better world it would be if they just left them alone or better protected and served.
by John Q Public
I think you have a point, pull the police out of Black communities and there would be no Black on Black crime. I think it is worth a shot......ROLF
by thelma
the vast majority of the black community has repeatedly asked for police intervention. what we do not want is another self proclaimer agitator to come in and tell us what we think! this kind of liberal agitation and promotion of criminal life style has lead to thousands of deathes of our youth. go make money off some one else!
