The SHORTWAVE REPORT 5/2/03 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.3MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Spain, Russia, Germany, Netherlands, and Cuba.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (May 2) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.3MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:57) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.com Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PDST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Spanish National Radio, the Voice Of Russia, Radio Deutsche Welle, Radio Netherlands, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Spain- The Council of the Americas annual conference opened Monday, with confrontations between Latin American nations opposed to the invasion of Iraq and the US Sec of State Powell. Belgium, France, Germany, and Luxemborg initiated a multinational military force, which they hope will include most of the EU.
From Russia- 13 unarmed Iraqis were killed by American soldiers west of Bagdhad. The US is planning how to run the Iraqi oil industry before the formation of the interim government. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency insists on the return of UN weapons inspectors in Iraq. An international conference on the use of depleted uranium weapons was held in Dublin.
From Germany- Currently I can hear a DW transmission to Africa. Here is a press review from that transmission, covering the election in Argentina, and the possible cold war resulting from the new EU military formation.
From Netherlands- The Palestinian Parliment approved the appointment of a new cabinet several hours after Israel used missles from a helicopter to vaporize a popular Palestinian leader, followed several hours later by a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv. A Belgian lawyer is filing a lawsuit for war crimes against General Tommy Franks, for civilian deaths in Iraq.
From Cuba- US soldiers fired into a second Iraqi demonstration this week, killing 3 more civilians. Unexploded bombs have killed or maimed over 500 Iraqis since the end of the war, and the so-called mayor of Bagdhad was arrested. Cuba has denounced as a major disinformation campaign, the international reports on the jailing and executions of dissidents.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
