protest Cheney Pombo visit to Stockton Monday May 22

by John Morearty (john [at] morearty.com)
VP Cheney will be raising money for Congressman Richard Pombo in Stockton on Monday, May 22, 4:30 PM at the Fox/Bob Hope Theater in downtown Stockton. A driving and foot protest is planned.
Peace friends! Please circulate this email very widely, right now!
Please come out and protest the policies of Richard Pombo and Cheney/Bush on Monday in Stockton! WEAR ORANGE!
The purpose of our legal protest is to speak out clearly and peacefully to our fellow citizens--NOT to stop Cheney from speaking, NOT to obstruct traffic.
Vice-President Cheney will be at the Fox/Bob Hope theater in downtown Stockton Monday, May 22, to raise money for Congressman Richard Pombo. (According to Sunday's NY Times, Pombo could go down to defeat!)
The Fox/Hope theater event begins at 4:30 pm. The Fox/Hope is on Main St. at San Joaquin St., just across the street south of the courthouse. We're asking people to
WALK OR DRIVE AROUND DOWNTOWN WITH PROTEST SIGNS.
Here are three plans. FOLLOW ANY ONE OF THESE THREE, WHATEVER WORKS FOR YOU! But in any case, WEAR ORANGE! (It's the hunter's "don't shoot me" color--in honor of Cheney, who recently shot a fellow quail hunter.)
If you can make it at 3 PM, gather near the Victory Park fire station. Have an appropriate sign on your vehicle, we will also have a extra signs and tape. About 3:15 we will drive downtown, and circle the area of the Fox theater, wherever the police are allowing traffic to go. Just obey the traffic laws, and keep on driving, so people see your signs. Or,
As previously announced, gather near the Fire Station in Victory Park (just west of the stop light) at 5 PM. Put an appropriate sign on your vehicle. We will also have extra signs, and tape. About 5:15, drive downtown, and circle the area of the Fox theater, wherever the police are allowing traffic to go. Just obey the traffic laws, and keep on driving, so people see your signs. Or,
Walk in the area of the Fox/Hope, with a sign. This is a very visible way of protest.
Bring your own sign, or come to Victory Park at 3 PM or 5 PM and get one. In any case, DO NOT PUT YOUR SIGN ON A WOODEN STICK--the police will confiscate it, or make you take it off the stick.
Some of us walkers will be carrying a few extra signs downtown; find one of us, and ask.
Park downtown. There is meter parking on south Center St. and north El Dorado, just across from the Civic Auditorium/City Hall/public library, around Martin Luther King Plaza; 25 cents an hour, ten hours. There is also a new parking garage just south of Channel St., 1/2 block north of Weber; enter on Hunter or San Joaquin Streets.
We suggest the following walking loop, for maximum visibility:
In front of the Fox, turn left/north on San Joaquin one block to Weber, turn left/west one block to Hunter, turn right/north a block and a half to the Cinema plaza, turn left/west through the plaza, turn left/south on El Dorado two blocks to the pedestrian mall south of the Bank of America, turn left/east through the Hunter Square fountain plaza and you are in front of the Fox again.
While walking, Do not obstruct pedestrian traffic. We have the legal right to walk peacefully with signs, not blocking other foot traffic!
Have fun, and in any case, WEAR ORANGE!
After the walking and driving, about six o'clock, we'll gather for coffee, soda, beer and Tales of War and Peace at the Casa Flores, on the corner of Weber and Hunter streets. They also have good and inexpensive Mexican food.

See you there!
Love, the Organizing Committee: Margee Ensign, Mark Holmerud, John Morearty, Ria deGroot, Gary Barrington, Bill McLaury, Jim Walsh, Jillian Q. Johnson, Seamus Gormly.
PS: Orange you glad we're doing this?
