Gloating Telecom Giants Will Get Congress To Hand Them Control Of The Internet Unless We Stop Them

Not since the beginning of civilization has there been an invention that has benefited human kind in the way the internet currently does. I view its preservation in the same vein with the First Amendment, and the protections provided for freedom of the press and freedom of speech.

But just recently AOL was caught trashing emails that contained a reference to a web site they did not like. In communist China today they are actually policing political thought online even now. It is the free and open exchange of ideas that has been the primary factor in the miraculous and inspiring growth of the world wide web as we know it today, but now corporate telecom giants in our own country like AT&T and Verizon are spending millions of dollars to try to get Congress to enable corruption of the internet.

There are some real heros in Congress like Rep Ed Markey (D-MA) who are fighting to preserve our surfing freedoms. And there are some real enemies like Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), whose "Communications Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act of 2006", as has become all too usual, does exactly the OPPOSITE of what its title suggests. The House Commerce Committee is scheduled to take up consideration of this crippling of the internet this Wednesday, April 26, and we need every voice we have, with the freedom we now have, to USE the internet to demand that they enact strong protections for net neutrality [animated video].
