U.S. Has Highest Poverty Rate Of Any Developed Country In The World
It is a vision of deep and abiding poverty. Yet the Lumpkins are not alone in their plight. They are just the negative side of the American equation. America does have vast, wealthy suburbs, huge shopping malls and a busy middle class, but it also has vast numbers of poor, struggling to make it in a low-wage economy with minimal government help.

I saw the WHY WE FIGHT movie the other day and it is excellent! It is the kind of film that those of us working for peace will want everyone to see. So let's support it be going to see it this week - it will not play long unless there is a major upsurge in folks going to see it.

Learn more about it at:

The film is inspired by and built around Eisenhower's farewell speech of 1960 warning us about the military/industrial complex, which he intended to refer to as the military/industrial/intelligence complex and the film points out is also the military/industrial/congressional complex. -Ken

Vietnam memories curb arrests over Iraq duty

2/16/2006

WASHINGTON (Bloomberg) - Pentagon officials have refrained from arresting and imprisoning military reservists who refuse to report for duty in Iraq out of concern of evoking memories of Vietnam, a U.S. congressman said.

There is some "uncomfortableness at the Pentagon to have them arrested," Rep. Steve Buyer, R-Ind., said at a hearing on Capitol Hill Wednesday.

Instead, the Defense Department is considering general discharges for the less than 100 reservists who haven't reported for deployment to Iraq, Buyer said. Such discharges would entitle the reservists to Veterans Administration benefits.

"All hell would break loose in the country about the war and the way we're fighting it" if the reservists were arrested, said Lawrence J. Korb, a senior resident fellow at the Center for American Progress, a research organization in Washington.

The U.S. Army has issued stop-loss orders to prevent about 50,000 soldiers from leaving the service after their active-duty terms are completed. The Pentagon has relied heavily on guard and reserve troops for missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Fewer than 100 declined to report, Major Elizabeth Robbins, an Army spokeswoman said. The individuals haven't been designated as absent without leave, a status that could subject them to arrest, Robbins said.

# intro night in San Francisco this Wednesday February 22.
Bring your friends and share this with anyone that you think could benefit Power Manifestation

Power Manifestation Intro Night Promotion

Life doesn’t have to be so hard. When applying the practical philosophy of Power Manifestation, creating what you want in your life can be an effortless and joyous process. In this brief introductory course, you will be introduced to your Internal Guidance System or IGS and Power Manifestation. Using the IGS will bring the power of discernment back into your hands, allowing you to make powerful and effective choices to create the world around you. Power Manifestation is a combination of quantum physics (as presented in the film What the Bleep Do We Know?) and spiritual principles. This combination reveals to us how the world operates through vibrational frequencies. Our thoughts are vibrations, and every thought we have creates a vibrational attractor field, which in turn creates our reality. Through the universal Law of Attraction, we attract to us the vibration of our thoughts as well as the intensity of what we are focused on. Using this revolutionary process offered in the Power Manifestation courses, you will learn to harness this power to create with clarity and ease. Power Manifestation: The Intro Night Basics Course presents this philosophy and offers you a unique combination of practices that enable you to know your true desires and manifest them more quickly.
The Power Manifestation courses were created by Zen DeBrucke, who has spent more than 15 years researching and studying the subject of consciousness and manifestation. Zen has also been a successful business executive and entrepreneur and has coached hundreds of business leaders and individuals to success in every area of their lives.

Film Series on 9/11: An Inside Job

The Truth and Lies of 9/11

Presented by Gypsy Gypsy

This is the famous documentary by Mike Ruppert who once was a
narcotics investigator in the L.A. Police Department until he
realized that the CIA was dealing drugs and arms. Authorities
offered him a nice sallary to keep his mouth shut, but they obviously
underestimated him; Mike became a whistle blower instead. They tried
to threaten him, they even shot him, but he survived and never backed
down. He spent many years touring the country and exposing the CIA's
drug dealings and other dirty secrets. Today Mike is justly
considered the pioneer of the 9/11 truth movement. In this
documentary, Mike explains the connection between the CIA and Wall
Street -- Wall Street being a front, a "laundromat," for the CIA. He
points out a connection between the put options on both American and
United Airlines and the CIA as well as many other incriminating
facts. He is the author of Crossing the Rubicon, the second best-
selling book after The Kean Commission Report on 911. http://

“Stopping Cancer Before It Starts” – Cancer Proofing Your Body with Plant
Superfoods with Doctor-Chef Michael Greger, M.D. 1 Hour 45 Minutes. Many of
our members have seen Dr. Greger in person. This DVD captures his dynamic
and engaging style with lots of information on whole plant superfoods that
may block and even reverse the four steps of tumor formation and then shows
him preparing quick, tasty, nutritious recipes! Dr. Greger believes 70% of
all cancer deaths are preventable through diet alone. He will explain what
free radicals and antioxidants really are and how specific foods work to
protect your body from the ravages of aging, cancer and other chronic
degenerative diseases. Dr. Greger shows how a phyto-nutrient rich
plant-based diet may be our best protection against the cancer epidemic.
Learn the why’s and the how’s of optimum healthy eating. For those who
already have heard Dr. Greger speak, this will be a great opportunity to
review his information. It would also be a great opportunity to bring a
friend or family member to hear and see “the most articulate and
entertaining medical speaker on plant-based nutrition today” – Michael
Klaper, M.D. Director, Institute of Nutrition Education and Research.

# Feb 25 NATIONAL BROADCAST OF AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY ON LINK TV
Link TV Makes Pro-Animal Film Available to Viewers in 26 Million American Homes

The Witness Highlights the Dramatic and Inspiring Personal Transformation of Tough Brooklyn Construction Contractor Whose Heart is Opened by the Love of a Kitten

Airs Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 PM PST /10 PM EST

Send a personalized e-vite to friends and family:
http://www.tribeofheart.org/tohhtml/linktvevite.htm

San Francisco, CA—Jan. 17, 2006—Link TV today announced the upcoming broadcast of the award-winning documentary The Witness, produced by James LaVeck and directed by Jenny Stein of Tribe of Heart. The Witness, which airs Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 PM PST, 10 PM EST, during Link TV’s pledge drive, tells the inspiring story of tough construction contractor turned animal rescuer Eddie Lama. A film festival favorite, The Witness has won seven Best Documentary awards and one Best of Festival award. Los Angeles Times columnist Howard Rosenberg wrote, “The Witness is one man’s truth that cries out for mass exposure… may be the most important and persuasive film about animals ever made.”

Actor William Baldwin, who calls The Witness "one of the most moving documentaries I've ever seen,” urges viewers to “watch this important, life-changing film.” Baldwin and his wife, singer-songwriter Chynna Phillips of the musical group Wilson-Phillips, were so impressed with The Witness that they hosted screenings at their home for their friends and colleagues.

“Eddie Lama, who learned about violence through his own rites of passage on the mean streets of Brooklyn, now speaks with eloquence, passion and humility about the pressing need to protect the vulnerable,” said Baldwin. “That a man with his life experience could be so completely transformed by spending time with a kitten is a testimony both to the magic of the human-animal relationship and the magic of the human spirit."

“So many people who have seen The Witness at film festivals and independent theatres have asked us, ‘why isn’t this playing on national TV?’” said the film’s producer James LaVeck. “We always tell them there are a lot of great films they’re not getting to see that tell the truth about what goes on behind closed doors in this country. That’s why now, this opportunity to reach a mass audience in partnership with a broadcaster with the integrity and independence of Link TV, means so much.”

“We bring documentary films to the American viewer that extend far beyond the narrow scope of the popular media,” said Link TV Producer Toni Whiteman. “The Witness is one of those films, made with the courage and commitment to speak on behalf of those who have no voice. The strength of the force to banish this provocative film is the very reason we chose to broadcast it.”

ABOUT TRIBE OF HEART: Producer James LaVeck and Director Jenny Stein founded their Ithaca, New York-based non-profit production company, Tribe of Heart, to fill an unmet need for films that explore the human potential to respond to injustice with creativity and non-violence.

ABOUT LINK TV: Link TV is a non-commercial, independent television network available in more than 26 million U.S. homes on DIRECTV channel 375 and DISH Network channel 9410. The 24-hour programming is a mix of documentaries, international news, foreign films and the best of World Music. Link TV is operated by Link Media, Inc., a California non-profit organization, with production studios in San Francisco, New York and Washington.

# Masculine Presence- Feminine Fire Workshop
Saturday, February 25, 2006 - Sunday, February 26,
Hello to all!

I have never distributed anything on my tribe network before, but this is the kind of thing that might be the little kick that one of you is needing. There’s a personal development workshop coming up the weekend of February 25th and 26th at WholeBody Wisdom in Oakland.

I’ve been working privately with the instructor and can attest to the soundness of what he communicates. He has the ability to connect with students at whatever level they’re able to work from and draw out of them a grounded strength that they didn’t even know was being hidden. His teachings focus on the alignment of our different bodies (heart, mind, soul, and sexuality), releasing energy caught up in shame and fear into a unified voice of love. This is his “Inspiring Masculine Presence- Unleashing Feminine Fire” workshop- the one that I hear referenced most by his previous clients.

I’m going to be doing this workshop with my partner. It’s not specifically a couple’s thing, but we decided to take this step in our growth together.
It’s also not for everyone. But for those it is for, it will be invaluable.

I would recommend at least checking out what Scott does with his practice. When we’ve plateaued in our development it can be invigorating just to see that this kind of empowerment work is happening nearby.

# Synergy Social: Quantum Relationships $18/25
When: Monday, February 27th 7:30pm to 10:30pm
Where: OneTaste @ 1070 Folsom in San Francisco

===========================================

Would you like to experience less conflict in your life? Would you like to
experience more synergy in your life? We will explore how in this event,
giving us all an opportunity to engage in creating the kind of world in
which we all want to belong.

The simple truth is that in relationships, one and one never equal two.
They either equal more than two, and synergy is experienced...or they equal
less than two...and conflict is experienced. Therefore, all relating is
truly quantum relating.

What is it that governs the patterns that either mesh well and create more
of what we love and thrive on, or grind like ill-fitting gears? What would
it be worth to you to have awareness and choice around these dynamics? What
would it be worth to you to be able to short-circuit conflict before it
escalates? How valuable would it be for you to be able to consciously create
synergy at work, at play, and in romance? To have more access to
consciously creating more beauty and joy in all of your relationships?

That is the conversation we will have as the center-piece of this event.

See the full details about this event here:

# The Color of Palo Alto: Art Meets Canopy
How a Public Art Project is Helping to Preserve Our Urban Forest – One Photograph at a Time
Saturday, March 4, 9 -10:30 am Free
Presented by Canopy and the Palo Alto Art Center

Celebrate Arbor Month with a lively presentation by artist Samuel Yates on how The Color of Palo Alto incorporates technology, contemporary art, environmental protection, and public service into one award-winning public art project that helps maintain our urban forest.

The presentation will focus on how the City of Palo Alto will use the project to:
• Respond more accurately and efficiently to daily tree inquiries from residents.
• Coordinate tree maintenance decisions between departments.
• Assist the building permit application, smart planning, and tree verification process.
• Preserve city trees by reducing root system destruction.
• Reduce pollution and natural resource use.
• Promote the City’s environmental and renewable energy initiatives.
• Create the nation’s first photo-assisted 911 emergency response system.

As part of a public art project, artist Samuel Yates photographed each of the 17,860 properties in Palo Alto to find the average color of each property, street, and neighborhood. The final results, including "The Color of Palo Alto," will be unveiled later this year and used as paint, font, and product colors thereafter. The potential city benefits emerged in 2001 when the artist offered Palo Alto a free license to use his photographs and tie them into the citywide parcel data system.

San Francisco Magazine named it the "Best Art Project in the Bay Area;" Dwell Magazine gave it their "Nice Modernist" humanitarian award; and the San Jose Mercury News called it "The Great Palo Alto Art Experiment." Come see for yourself what it’s all about!

Two ways to help animals in San Francisco on Sun., March 5, 2006 Come to one or both:

Please note:
The anti-KFC demonstration is on schedule in sun, fog or light drizzle. It will be rescheduled in the event of rain.
The Advocates Dinner is taking place in all weather, rain or shine.

(1) NEW TIME THIS MONTH ONLY: Co-sponsored by the SF Vegetarian Society and the Veggie Jews' Tsedakah (charity) Brigade: Participate in the PETA campaign against Kentucky Fried Cruelty (see http://www.Kentuckyfriedcruelty.com). You can educate the public regarding KFC's treatment of chickens by passing out leaflets at KFC, 1900 Irving Street at the corner of 20th Avenue in San Francisco from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PETA is providing the literature.

(2) Join the Veggie Jews Tsedakah Brigade for an Advocates Dinner: At 6:00 p.m. we'll walk two blocks to Shangri La vegetarian
restaurant (2026 Irving St. at 22nd Ave., 731-2548), a Kosher-vegan
restaurant, where we'll order around 6:15 p.m. This is a chance to
eat tasty, low-cost, Chinese vegan food; to socialize; and most
importantly, to spend a few minutes writing letters to help relieve
the suffering of animals. Suggestions for subjects and recipients
of letters will be available but feel free to bring your own agenda,
as well as your own paper, envelopes, pen and stamps.

For information and to RSVP, write to veggiejews cyberonic com

[Veggie Jews is an on-line and real world organization with events in local communities dedicated to supporting Jewish vegans and vegetarians and spreading vegan, vegetarian and animal rights values into the Jewish community.
