Wikipedia: "The FDA receives more complaints related to aspartame than any other food additive. Concerns about aspartame frequently revolve around symptoms and health conditions that are allegedly caused by the sweetener. The 92 health effects reported to the FDA are: abdominal pain, anxiety attacks, arthritis, asthma, asthmatic reactions, bloating/edema, blood sugar control problems (hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia), brain cancer (Pre-approval studies in animals), breathing difficulties, burning eyes or throat, burning urination, inability to think clearly, chest pains, chronic cough, chronic fatigue, confusion, death, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, excessive thirst or hunger, fatigue, feeling 'unreal', flushing of face, hair loss (baldness) or thinning of hair, headaches/migraines, hearing loss, heart palpitations, hives (Urticaria), hypertension (high blood pressure), impotency and sexual problems, inability to concentrate, infection susceptibility, insomnia, irritability, itching, joint pains, laryngitis, "like thinking in a fog," marked personality changes, memory loss, menstrual problems or changes, muscle spasms, nausea or vomiting, numbness or tingling of extremities, other allergic-like reactions, panic attacks, phobias, poor memory, rapid heartbeat, rashes, seizures and convulsions, slurring of speech, swallowing pain, tachycardia, tremors, tinnitus, vertigo, vision loss, and weight gain."

Between Bush I and Bush II-- Defense Secretary and the Man Who says he Enjoys Standing, DONALD RUMSFELD WORKED FOR ASPARTAME'S MAKER, G.D. SEARLE Co. owned by Monsanto. With his PR help, Aspartame was rammed through FDA approval-- a drug, reclassified as a food. Aspartame has been a bonanza to the soft drink manufacturers and Nutrasweet.

The Wikipedia article on Aspartame provides the info-- note: Rumsfeld's neme is routinely erased-- so read the History of the article, and check the links.

Products And Packaging Myths & Rumors
Rumor: Soft drinks cause dehydration, leading to cancer
This particular rumor claims that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, and that by drinking five glasses of water each day, the risks of certain types of cancer are greatly reduced. The dehydration is blamed on the substitution of soft drinks for water in many Americans' diets.
Our Response: All beverages are a source of water. In addition, many foods provide additional water. Soft drinks, like other beverages and foods, are sources of water. The vast majority of healthy people adequately meet their daily hydration needs by consuming beverages at meals and otherwise letting thirst be their guide, according to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).The NAS report refers to total water, which includes the water contained in beverages and the moisture in foods, to avoid confusion with drinking water only. The reference level of nearly 4 quarts for adult men and nearly 3 quarts for adult women per day covers the expected needs of healthy, sedentary people in temperate climates.

According to the NAS 2004 Dietary Reference Intakes for Water, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride, and Sulfate, all beverages, including those that are caffeinated, contribute to hydration. While concerns have been raised that caffeine has a diuretic effect, research shows this effect is temporary, and there is no convincing evidence that caffeine leads to dehydration. Therefore, the NAS concluded that when it comes to meeting daily hydration needs, caffeinated beverages can contribute as much as noncaffeinated options.
