Nut facts sourced from Whole Foods Companion by Dianne Onstead
NUTS ARE RICH IN:
• Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which can reduce blood cholesterol, especially when substituted for foods rich in saturated fat, such as meat or cheese.
• Folic acid and other B vitamins, which may reduce the risk of heart disease.
• Vitamin E, known to be cardio protective. Almonds and hazelnuts have more vitamin E than other nuts do.
• Copper, potassium, and magnesium- all three are linked to heart health.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the
turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a
payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product
to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so the y
added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.
How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the
same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Margarine..
Very high in trans fatty acids.
Triple risk of coronary heart disease.
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers
HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY
INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..
This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and
anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the
molecular structure of the substance).
You can try this yourself:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area.
Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should
tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value;
nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a
home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your
Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to "butter them up")!

Freedoms Lost Under G.W. Bush
http://baltimorechronicle.com/020105ChuckBaldwin.shtml
FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION: Government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity to assist terror investigations.
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION: Government has closed once-public immigration hearings, has secretly detained hundreds of people without charges, and has encouraged bureaucrats to resist public records questions.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH: Government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they tell anyone that the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation.
RIGHT TO LEGAL REPRESENTATION: Government may monitor federal prison jailhouse conversations between attorneys and clients, and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes.
FREEDOM FROM UNREASONABLE SEARCHES: Government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation.
RIGHT TO A SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIAL: Government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.
RIGHT TO LIBERTY: Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them.
That good citizens are compliant and unconcerned regarding G.W. Bush's propensity to trample constitutional freedoms bespeaks a great ignorance or a great apathy, or both.
These rights have already been lost! Whether individual Americans have been personally subjected to the resultant tyranny or not doesn't change the fact that they have already lost these freedoms! This fact, alone, should be enough for any studious lover-of-liberty to be outraged.

There is something very wrong with Chomsky. We always hear how brilliant he is, but he arrogantly passes on the difficult topics: i.e. JFK assassination, shoot down of TWA 800, and now 9/11 and the Anthrax terror. I have concluded that he is either mentally defective, or a mole. Anything that may involve the dreaded "c" word he avoids. He has performed a major disservice to Americans and democracy by not dealing with the hard stuff. His function seems to be to discourage and confuse.

THE GREAT CONSPIRACY
Presented by Gypsy Gypsy
For this film, Barry Zwicker, a Canadian investigative journalist,
has put together an excellent compilation of short news reports
dealing with many different aspects of the 9/11 attacks such as the
airforce stand down (powerful footage of NORAD's conversations with
the FAA), the contents of Building 7 (such as Enron files), Bush's
reaction to the attacks as well as his resistance to an
investigation, and much much more. Barry also gives a very insightful
historical perspective where he points out many cases where
governments had attacked their own people to blame it on someone else
as a pretext for war.
Before and after the film, everyone's invited to indulge in our

BE NICE!
A social event every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 6pm to 11pm.

We could not find one, so we started one!
So if you don't go out much anymore because clubs start so late and you don't like having to shout over the music, this is for you! Come out and meet people in a Parisian art-deco style nightclub where you can enjoy food from appetizers to dinner if you like, fresh drinks and ambient music -- quiet enough to talk over. A relaxed atmosphere, you can interact, or just come on out to have a drink after work and groove on the vibe.

ADPSR is working with community organizations to ensure a just reconstruction of New Orleans. Juan Calaf,a member of ADPSR's new Katrina Task Force will be speaking about his recent trip down to New Orleans. He visited different grassroots organizations working toward the same goals yet with very different approaches. The presentation will examine these differences and feature both: A Description of the Current Community Organizing on the Ground and the Possible Strategies Towards a New Just Reconstruction.
Survival in the wake of a man-made disaster
There are two New Orleans. Today these divisions are more painfully clear than ever.
There is a wealthy and predominantly white side of the Crescent City-the French Quarter, the Garden District and Uptown (the French Quarter, for example, is 95% white). This side seems to willfully ignore the socio-economic asymmetry that prevailed in New Orleans. In these areas the damage left behind by hurricane Katrina is marginal. Because these white areas are built on higher ground than the rest of the city, little flooding happened here. Reestablished affluent families are already back to their daily routines: walking their dogs, shopping at re-opened boutiques, and dining in the French Quarter.
The other side of town is a poor predominantly African-American area known as the East Bank, which includes the 7th and 9th Wards (for example, the lower 9th ward is 98% black). This part of New Orleans was severely affected by flooding in the wake of Katrina. In contrast to the re-opened white areas, the 7th and 9th wards are mostly vacant because residents are unable to return to their homes. In the hardest-hit area - the Lower 9th Ward - there is a government blockade in effect because of deadly toxins left by the flood waters. Outside of the Lower 9th, homes are still left without power, telephone communication, natural gas and potable water. Because few evacuees can return, these areas are like ghost towns.

# Relationship-and-Sex-Talk w/Drs. Vera & Steve Bodansky
Wednesday, February 8 7:30 PM Books Inc. 2251 Chestnut St. 415-931-3633
http://www.booksinc.net/NASApp/store/IndexJsp;jsessionid=a8R
MEET THE AUTHORS!
Engage in rapt discussion on the nature of sensuality, sexuality, and relationships
with the world's top authorities on
"Extended Massive Orgasm"...
During the final countdown to Valentine’s Day, Drs. Vera and Steve Bodansky will celebrate the release of their third rousing title — TO BED OR NOT TO BED: WHAT MEN WANT, WHAT WOMEN WANT, HOW GREAT SEX HAPPENS — by meeting with readers and others to discuss their intriguing, often provocative, and always enlightening ideas on sexuality and relationships.
The premise of TO BED OR NOT TO BED is that the differences between the sexes create both fun and tension. Most men want sex, either with a new or current partner. Women want sex, too, but are trained to put up obstacles so as not to seem “easy.” The Bodanskys explain how to use these differences to create more pleasure and intimacy in bed and elsewhere.
The Drs. Bodansky are longtime residents of Walnut Creek. Their previous books are EXTENDED MASSIVE ORGASM and ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO EXTENDED MASSIVE ORGASM, which have sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. The Bodanskys have been featured in several national and international magazines, from Tina Brown's Talk to Marie Claire, Glamour and Cosmopolitan, and more.

February Screwup:
screwup: BDSM for trannies, genderqueers and their friends, presents...
Hands-on Play: smacking, spanking, pinching, punching, stroking, and hitting.
Friday, February 10th (spooky)
7:00 to 9:30 PM
New College of California, Room 22 (2nd floor)
766 Valencia Street (near 18th Street), San Francisco
Jen W. will be presenting on playing with hands. As a top, Jen finds hands to be very intimate toys. Jen’s been told that they can be more painful than any other instruments, including canes, and that they have brought connection to first-time play with new partners. In Jen’s experience as a bottom, hands were the sole instruments in one of the most intense scenes zie has participated in. Jen will explore various ways to use hands to create pleasure and pain in a BDSM context. Hands can be sensuous, sexy, subtle, or downright vicious, depending on how, or how hard, they are used. Hands can be a vehicle to intimacy, or a route to keep your bottom off-kilter in scene. Gloves can be used to change the sensations of hand play, to protect your hands as a top, and to practice safer play with genitals. Jen will cover how different hand shapes and types of strike will change the sensations that are created on impact, as well as self-care when playing with your hands. This will be an interactive workshop. Please bring Latex, Nitrile, or thin leather gloves if you have them!
screwup is for trannies, genderqueers, gender varient and our friends. This event is open to all genders and orientations and will be held in Room 22 at New College of California. Everyone transpositive is welcome. Many folks go out for coffee or food afterwards, so come prepared to join in...
$0-5 donation will be accepted to cover the cost of any supplies and flyers. No one turned away. The New College of California is wheelchair accessible and has gender-neutral bathrooms!
Please contact screwup screwup info if you'd like us to arrange for an ASL interpreter, to get involved, make suggestions or with any other requests.

# FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: False Profit, LLC and the Hallmark Corporation Announce the Inception of a New Joint Venture:
BITTERNESS, INC. 2/10/06
http://www.false-profit.com/events/bitternessinc
Alone?... Again?
Try not to let it burn you up. Fucking manufactured postcard holiday anyway, right? Why should you let hallmark decide the one day of the year you need to have a date? Fuck Hallmark! Fuck Valentine's Day!
Woah there, cowboy. Times like these we need some outside help. Some words of wisdom. A call to tolerance, maybe.
"Hatred ever kills, love never dies."
- Gandhi
"Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it.
Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it.
Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it."
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
Of course, neither Gandhi nor the Reverend Doctor ever had to push through a Valentine's Day without any nookie. They were also both extremely bad dancers. So, for our inspiration we turn to a lesser known but equally righteous quixotic quotable, Edna Millay:
"I love humanity, but I hate people."
There. That's more like it. Edna's our kinda girl. She definitely got down and got around in her day. Fuck, there's a book about her and her friends called "All-Night Party!" And what parties they were: "one might see English Rothschilds, French princesses, Russian grand dukes, mobsters, prizefighters, men of the stock exchange and Manhattan's social elite, elegant homosexuals, Village bohemians, white movie celebrities, and smartly dressed employees of the U.S. Post Office."
Make False Profit your Valentine for a celebration of the holiday that the American Corporation put on the map.

# Sunbrothers Valentine's Day Roses 2006 Sat Feb 11 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm free
Sunbrothers makes copper and bronze plants with handblown glass
flowers and fruit. We build solar panels into the leaves and place
lights in the flowers. During the day, sunlight charges up a set of
batteries in the base of the sculpture. At night, the small lights
inside the glass flowers make them glow, fade, and change color.
This year's show will be at the Sunbrothers Studio and will feature
new Long Stem Roses. There have been a few changes to the Long Stem
design - they can now live outside, each rose has its own
freestanding metal base, and the leaves will have a new patina to add
more color to the copper.
These roses are being introduced at a reduced price(!) This year's
Valentine's edition will be limited to 24 pieces, first come, first
served.

# International Quirkyalone Day Party Saturday, February 11 8: 00 pm Free
Fourth Annual International Quirkyalone Day Party, San Francisco (IQD IV)
Saturday, February 11 8 pm Cafe Royale 800 Post Street at Leavenworth
Whether you are single, coupled, widowed, divorced, or married,
International Quirkyalone Day is here for you as an alternative to
the mass-marketing barrage of Valentine's Day.
What is International Quirkyalone Day? IQD is a do-it-yourself
celebration of romance, friendship, and independent spirit. It's a
celebration of all kinds of love: for your friends, your family, your
partner if you have one, and last but not least, yourself. IQD is a
feel-good alternative to the marketing barrage of Valentine's Day and
an antidote to the silicone version of love presented in shows such
as Hooking Up and The Bachelor. It celebrates true romance,
independence, creativity, friendship, solitude, and
sociability.International
Quirkyalone Day is not anti-Valentine's Day, nor is it a pity party
for single people. It is merely a coincidence that IQD happens to
fall on the same day! (That's our story anyway, and we're sticking to
it.)
International Quirkyalone Day began in San Francisco with a party at
Atlas Cafe in 2003. In 2005, IQD was celebrated in 24 cities as
faraway as Sydney and New Delhi. Last year's San Francisco party was
featured on MSNBC's "Countdown with Keith Olbermann. . . " Watch the
clip here.
http://quirkyalone.net/qa/iqd.php?c=msnbc
This year's IQD is a release party for the paperback version of
Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics by Sasha Cagen.
IQD parties tend to be warm, intergenerational affairs. Feel free to
come alone, with friends, or with a partner. This is a friendly crowd.
There will be party games, raffle, an alone-time table, and more . . .
Elegant attire encouraged but not required.
Quirkytogethers/couples welcome. FREE!

Come to one or both:
(1) Join the Veggie Jews' Tsedakah Brigade and participate in the

(2) At 1:00 p.m. we'll walk two blocks to Shangri La vegetarian
restaurant (2026 Irving St. at 22nd Ave., 731-2548), a Kosher-vegan
restaurant, where we'll order around 1:15 p.m. This is a chance to

importantly, to spend a few minutes writing letters to help relieve
the suffering of animals. Suggestions for subjects and recipients
of letters will be available but feel free to bring your own agenda,

http://www.womensbuilding.org
7:30-9pm on consecutive Monday, Tuesday and Thursday night in February. Come join Christabel for a fun sexy dance class in her brand new 2700 square foot auditorium at Women's Building in San Francisco! This super energizing 3 night series designed for the beginner -- no experience required. Monday's class focuses hooping basics and hooping on the torso and arms. Tuesday's class focuses on legs and floorwork. Thursday's class focuses on off body moves, jumps, spins and rolls. There will be special attention given to micromovements of the body, working with the downbeat, freeing the head, unleashing your own style. We learn how to navigate using feeling instead of sight or thought -- becoming responsive, breathing deeply and creating fluid transitions. Guidance for performance given throughout class. Each evening will have a jam circle to close. A variety of music -- from electronic house music, R&B to classical and world music will provide a rich tapestry of sound for your dance. Class series costs $85. Enrollment preference given to those who register for entire series as this creates the "intensive hoop bootcamp" experience. 2 teaching assistants will be on site to make sure everyone recieves individualized attention. Pre-registration required at http://www.HoopGirl.com. Go to "Buy Now" link and register in online store. Space is limited and sells out every month. Don't miss out! Christabel is now teaching in San Francisco only once a month. The Womnen's Building is located at 3543 18th Street. Please arrive early or promptly on time - give yourself time to find parking. Bring water. For more information or questions on the class call Christabel at 415-515-0469. Please note that registration cannot be refunded, but credit may be applied towards future classes.

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value;
nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a
home to grow.

A Nocturnum Productions, and Early Party Events production:
BE NICE!
A social event every 2nd Wednesday of the month from 6pm to 11pm.
This club is our answer to wanting a place to go to that started early, served food from a diverse menu, no cover, has a quiet atmosphere so it's easy to talk to people, and has the vibe that you get when you interact with people in the early days of Black Rock City.
21 and over, no cover.
It's at Catalyst Cocktails, 312 Harriet (@ Bryant between 6th & 7th streets).

Because few evacuees can return, these areas are like ghost towns.

former Presidential candidate GEORGE MCGOVERN ***
talk & book signing for Social Security and the Golden Age
Wednesday, February 8th at 7 pm
In his timely new book, Social Security and the Golden Age: An Essay on the New American Demographic, one of our greatest living political thinkers, George McGovern, argues that Social Security is NOT currently facing a crisis. Instead, the former United States Senator and Democratic Presidential candidate discusses ways that we can maintain this program well into the future with just a few simple steps.
George McGovern served in the U.S. Senate for 18 years and was the 1972 Democratic candidate for president. He is a decorated World War II bomber pilot, holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, and directed the first Food for Peace Program under President John F. Kennedy. In 2000, he was awarded the nation's highest honor, the Medal of Freedom.

FREE!

# Two ways to help animals in San Francisco on Sun., February 12, 2006!
Come to one or both:
(1) Join the Veggie Jews' Tsedakah Brigade and participate in the
PETA campaign against Kentucky Fried Cruelty (see
http://www.Kentuckyfriedcruelty.com ). You can educate the public regarding
KFC's treatment of chickens by passing out leaflets at KFC, 1900
Irving Street at the corner of 20th Avenue in San Francisco from NOON
to 1:00 p.m. PETA is providing the literature.
(2) At 1:00 p.m. we'll walk two blocks to Shangri La vegetarian
restaurant (2026 Irving St. at 22nd Ave., 731-2548), a Kosher-vegan
restaurant, where we'll order around 1:15 p.m. This is a chance to
eat tasty, low-cost, Chinese vegan food; to socialize; and most
importantly, to spend a few minutes writing letters to help relieve
the suffering of animals. Suggestions for subjects and recipients
of letters will be available but feel free to bring your own agenda,
as well as your own paper, envelopes, pen and stamps.
In the event of rain that is heavier than a San Francisco
fog/drizzle, the event will be rescheduled. For information and to
RSVP, write to veggiejews cyberonic com.

Fireside Room, Unitarian Universalist Church 505 E. Charleston Road Palo Alto
Speaker: Nancy Price Cost: Free
A discussion about important issues of water scarcity and quality and the effects of privatization. Price will deconstruct the myth that corporations can provide safer, cleaner, and more affordable water. She will review how international trade agreements threaten the democratic authority of our local and state representatives to protect public water services and water resources, using as an example the Cal American takeover of the Sacramento water supply. Price will also discuss how some citizen groups in California and elsewhere are challenging the privatization of water services and taking of public water for private profit and suggest directions for local education and action.
Nancy Price is a Co-Chair of Alliance for Democracy and is the Western Coordinator of its Defending Water for Life Project. She is on the leadership teams of Womens International League for Peace and Freedom's Save the Water and Challenge Corporate Power/Assert the People's Rights Campaigns. She is a co-founder of the Water Allies Network and is on the Boards of Friends of the River and the California Center for Community Democracy. She has also served on the City of Davis Planning Commission and the Davis Energy Task Force.
