BUSH STEP DOWN -- Pics from January 31 Rally in SF

In demonstrations in 68 cities across the country last night, people answered President Bush’s State of the Union address with a sharp message: the State of Union is a State of Emergency. In San Francisco, an estimated 4,000 people demonstrated in Union Square.

Speakers included

Dr. Kevin Padian, the President of the National Center for Science Education, spoke about the regime’s attacks on science

Rev. Charles Tigard of the Metropolitan Community Church of San Franciscola, lambasted Christian fascism.

devorah major, a former Poet Laureate of San Francisco gave a poetic call to action, “an emergency alert and the republic for which it stands.”

Finian Makepeace of World Can't Wait delivered a rabblerousing oratory of spit-fire ethical common-sense that riveted the audience which erupted into a roar of staunch agreement upon his conclusion, echoing his horror toward the Project for a New American Century and all it stands for.

Zen Buddhist priest Taigen Dan Leighton urged people to condemn torture with everything they have, and resist the temptation of embracing the ego-gratification of Bush’s violent means.

Laura Perez represented for Bay Area Coalition for Reproductive Rights

Diego Sandoval spoke about the Bush regime’s war on immigrants.

As Bush's state of the Inion was projected on a large TV, Taiko drummers teamed up with a colorful crew of rampant percussionists leading the crowd in a boisterous chanting of "There’s a Killer in the White House! Drive His Ass Out!," rand "will the real George Bush please step down, please step down."

The rally concluded with the toppling of a giant (30 - 40 ft) statue of Bush.

A national demonstration will be held in WAshington DC this Saturday, February 4 and hundreds of people from the Bay Area will be going. for more information see http://www.worldcan'twait.org
