Iran’s hard-line president called for the Bush administration to be tried on war crimes charges related to Iraq and denounced the West for its stance on Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, state-run television reported today.
“You, who have used nuclear weapons against innocent people, who have used uranium ordnance in Iraq should be tried as war criminals in courts,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in an apparent reference to the US.
Ahmadinejad didn’t elaborate, but he was apparently referring to the US military’s use of artillery shells packed with depleted uranium, which is far less radioactive than natural uranium and is left over from the process of enriching uranium for use as nuclear fuel.
Since the 2003 start of the Iraq war, US forces have reportedly fired at least 120 tons of shells packed with depleted uranium, which is an extremely dense material used by the US and British militaries for tank armour and armour-piercing weapons. Once fired, the shells melt, vaporise and turn to dust.
“Who in the world are you to accuse Iran of suspicious nuclear armed activity?” asked the Iranian president during a nationally televised ceremony marking the 36th anniversary of the establishment of the volunteer Basij paramilitary force.
Iran has been under intense pressure to curb its nuclear programme, which the US claims is part of an effort to produce nuclear weapons. Iran denies such claims and says its nuclear programme is peaceful and aimed at generating electricity. But it insists that it has the right to develop its nuclear programme, including enrichment of nuclear fuel.

Three days of protest engulfed De Anza Community College in Cupertino,
California when former Secretary of State Colin Powell came to speak
November 9-11, 2005. On Friday, November 11, over 150 protesters rallied
militantly outside the hall where Powell was speaking. One person was
arrested inside the hall disrupting Powell's speech. Outside the hall,
Campus Police, San Jose City Police and Santa Clara County Sheriffs - some
in riot gear - engaged in racial and religious profiling. Sheriffs
brutally arrested seven students singled out from among the protesters -
all of whom were people of color, six of whom were Muslim.

Cronenberg's deconstruction of television's dark side is part horror film and part psychological thriller, with unforgettably disturbing imagery and dialog worthy of cinematic immortality. James Woods portrays a cable television programmer who stumbles upon a pirate satellite broadcast that features the most shocking and depraved content imaginable: apparently genuine scenes of torture and murder. This "Videodrome" program warps the minds of its viewers, causing hallucinations and ultimately resulting in the viewers' total detachment from reality. As Woods's character descends into madness, we see laid bare his terrifying visions of the distortion and mutilation of the body as it merges with technology. Despite its gruesome content, this is an important film from an intellectual and historical standpoint. Although it is not for the faint of heart, "Videodrome" should be seen by anyone who casts a critical eye toward the evils of media manipulation.

A recently-released documentary investigating the American Indian Movement’s (AIM) occupation of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.

Cold, hungry, and armed only with hunting rifles, fake guns, and one AK-47, they held out for 71 days against the US government…A Tattoo on My Heart: The Warriors of Wounded Knee 1973 tells this dramatic and emotional story in the words of those men and women who struggled for survival inside the bunkers and ravines at Wounded Knee.”

THE VEIL OF BERTA Presented by Yael Martinez

This film delicately narrates the story of Berta Quintreman, an
elderly indigenous woman who, at the age of 88, led the last group
opposing the construction of the Ralco Project, a gigantic dam that
will stop the flow of the Bio Bio River and flood the land where her
native Mapuche Pewenche community has lived for centuries. A woman
with a strong personality and a unique blend of humor and energy,
Berta lives alone on her small pieces of land and observes all the
traditions of her people. On a daily basis she greets the trees and
the sun, drinks mate (a traditional herbal tea) with her dead, and
says her prayers. But at the same time we will see that she confronts
the authorities of Endesa (a Spanish transnational company) and the
Chilean government. She manages to halt the machinery and works
together with other families to prevent the flooding of their land.
The Mapuche people are the largest indigenous tribe of southern
Chile. After the ending of Pinochet's military dictatorship and under
increasing pressure from forestry companies, the Mapuche took up the
struggle in the 1990's to recover their territory. This film is
directed by Jeanette Paillán. Jeannette herself will attend the
showing to comment on her work and the situation of the Mapuche
people today. Jeannette's works have been screened internationally
since 1994. Her first documentary, Wallmapu, was awarded at the 2003
Human Rights Film Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jeannette was
also festival coordinator of the 2004 CLACPI Festival of Indigenous
Film and Video in Santiago, Chile.

The LAB, a 21 year-old nonprofit art gallery, is pleased to present
the 9th annual Postcard Show. For this open-invitational exhibition,
artists are encouraged to submit small format multiples-whether that
be a series of hand-made paintings or a stack of production run
postcards. The Postcard Show challenges artists to stretch the
parameters of media and conceptual strategies by doing what they do
best-subverting and manipulating a theme to their own ends. We
encourage you to participate in the fun! From December 2nd through
the 4th, hundreds of small format editions will be on view as the
gallery is transformed into a bazaar-like bargain-hunter's paradise.
Art lovers can explore original works and discover hidden gems at
affordable prices while supporting emerging artists and a great
alternative art space.

Fixed-price work will be available for $1 to $30 (cash, checks, VISA
or MasterCard accepted). Become a member of The LAB and get a chance
to preview the sale in our gallery Friday, December 2, from 5-6 PM.

"Stop Global Warming" Actions on December 3

Climate Crisis, USA Join the World!
http://www.climatecrisis.us today announced that it is
organizing actions across the United States on and
around December 3 to demand that the U.S. government
support action that is commensurate with the urgency of
the deepening climate crisis.

"Scores of Stop Global Warming local actions will be
happening during the Nov. 28-Dec. 9 time period when
the huge, United Nations Climate Conference in Montreal
takes place," said Ted Glick, spokesperson for the
group. "We will be acting in concert with hundreds of
thousands of people in at least 28 countries around
the world who are making December 3rd an
International Day of Action to Stop Global Warming."

The Climate Crisis group is demanding that the U.S.
government join the world by ratifying the Kyoto
Protocol.

Climate Crisis also demands that the federal government
withdraw its annual $25 billion in subsidies for coal
and oil and create equivalent subsidies for clean,
safe, non-nuclear energy alternatives; that it
dramatically strengthen energy conservation and fuel
efficiency standards; that it plan for a just
transition for workers, Indigenous communities and
others affected by a change to clean energy; and that
it actively defend the world's forests and support
community-run tree planting campaigns.

States where local actions will be taking place
include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado,
Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois,
Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and
Washington.

In D.C. on December 3, scores of hybrid vehicles
organized by the Chesapeake Climate Action Network will
circle the White House. In New Orleans the Alliance for
Affordable Energy will be holding a Stop Global Warming
event in the French Quarter. In Los Angeles on December
2, the Labor/Community Strategy Center will be doing an
action calling for an expansion of the city's bus fleet
to provide badly-needed public transportation which
will also cut down on car-producing greenhouse gases.
And in New York, also on December 2, a coalition of
groups will rally in Foley Square across from the
Federal Building calling for the federal government to
stop its obstructionist efforts and instead act to
address this urgent crisis.

In many localities, following the lead of organizers of
a massive march on December 3 in Montreal, participants
in the actions will try to hold their breath for 60

explained that, 'Doing so reminds us all how important
clean air is to all living things. It reminds us of the
urgency of our work. It is a metaphor for what people
on some Pacific islands may soon have to do as the
oceans rise and their islands disappear and breathing
becomes impossible.'

"Pockets of Vast Space" is an exhibition that unites the work of
thirteen artists from the San Francisco Art Institute. Their
practices consider a range of issues exploring the body and its
representations, negotiations and activations of environments, and
natural elements and cycles. Woven together at the Red Ink Studios
Gallery, these innovative and thoughtful paintings, drawings, prints,
sculptural installations, photographs, and video works highlight and
draw connections between artistic, social, and psychological
investigations.

The exhibition runs from December 3rd-18th with an opening reception
on Saturday, December 3rd (from 7-12) and a closing reception on
Sunday, December 18th.

# FYI the US runs a school of torture at Ft. Benning, GA
Previously called School Of the Americas (SOA),
now called Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC).
Congress demanded SOA be closed down. So they simply renamed it.
SOA used to be in Panama, until Manuel Noriega said it had to go.
Noriega was an important drug smuggling ally for the CIA.
When he broke with the CIA because he was not happy about the US school of torture in Panama, his days were numbered.
Two other notable men who the CIA made alliances with:
Sadam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden.
The CIA makes allies of people it can use to torture and murder it's enemies.
The CIA was arming, training and using Osama Bin Laden to fight the USSR in Afghanistan.
Before Sept 11, 2001, the CIA was negotiating an oil pipeline through Afghanistan to be built by Haliburton, paid for by Enron, to supply Unocal 76. Those negotiations broke down. That was plan A.
Plan B was flying our own airplanes into our own buildings and blaming them.
SEE: Operation Northwoods (1962) Plan B has been on the table for 43 years.
Cheney, Perle, Wolfowitz, et al are part of Project for a new American Century (PNAC) who wrote: (5 years before 911)
Without a Pearl Harbor style invasion the American people will not accept
the empirical mobilization necessary to seize middle eastern oil.
CIA initiated Saddam Hussein by having him commit an assasination in Iraq to prove himself.
Once installed to power by CIA, Saddam did oversee the torture and execution of an entire generation Iraqis.
Every Iraqi student or activist who had political aspirations was killed by Saddam who was a CIA operative.

GLBT Historical Society Sponsors Celebration of
San Francisco Dyke March History on Dec. 10

Meet the Dyke March, an afternoon of performance, videos,
dialogue and celebration, is set for Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, from 2
to 4
p.m. at the GLBT Historical Society, 657 Mission St., 3rd Floor, San
Francisco. The event is taking place in conjunction with an exhibit
at the
Historical Society of photographs by Cathy Cade and Jane Philomen
Cleland documenting the 12-year history of the Dyke March, a dynamic
gathering that brings together tens of thousands of women each June
to march through the streets of San Francisco the evening before the
annual LGBT Pride Parade.

"Meet the Dyke March" festivities will honor San Francisco Dyke March
cofounders Lisa Roth and Leslie Mullin. The afternoon will feature a
video
presentation by Cade and Cleland; a revue of performance artists,
musicians and drag kings drawn from the Dyke March committee;
reminiscences of Dyke March history; and an opportunity for members
of the community to give feedback to the organizers of the 2006 Dyke
March. In addition, the Historical Society galleries will be open for
viewing. Light refreshments will be provided. The event is open to
the public; admission is free, but donations to support the GLBT
Historical Society are encouraged.

Marking its 20th anniversary this year, the GLBT Historical Society is an
internationally renowned museum, archives and research center devoted to
increasing public understanding, appreciation and affirmation of the history
and culture of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and other sexual minority
individuals and communities.

# Panel Discussion: Int'l Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

Dec 17th, Third Annual International Day to End Violence Against Sex
Workers

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers is meant to
call attention to hate crimes and violence against sex workers all
over the globe. Originally thought of by Dr. Annie Sprinkle and
started by the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA as a memorial and
vigil for the victims of the Green River Killer in Seattle
Washington, it has grown to be a day for strategizing to end these
acts as well as remember the victims. Over thirty cities around the
world have participated in this event.

This year Sex Workers Outreach Project is expanding events to cover
the entire week of December 17th so that we may diversify the forums
for discussion around violence against sex workers.

The Panel Discussion portion of these events on Dec. 17th from
10AM-2PM will focus on both identifying forms of violence against sex
workers, including structural violence and stigmatization, as well as
thinking of solutions. Panelists will include sex workers' rights
activists, sex workers, prison abolitionists, law enforcement, and more!

"Unsilent Night," composer Phil Kline's free, all-volunteer outdoor
boombox holiday concert, returns to San Francisco for its third
annual performance on Wednesday, December 21, 2005, at 6:45 PM.

A moving piece of ambient public art, Unsilent Night can be compared
to a holiday caroling party, except that participants don't sing.
Instead, each carries a boombox playing a separate cassette, CD, or
MP3 that becomes part of the piece. In effect, Kline and his co-
performers become single elements in a huge, mobile sound system.

Performed within the confines of the city streets, Unsilent Night
reverberates off the cars and buildings, resulting in a magnificent,
drifting cloud of shimmering, echoing sound. The 43-minute piece
includes chiming bells, choral voices, and various electronic
effects. (Kline cites Brian Eno and Charles Ives among his influences.)

Kline has performed Unsilent Night in Manhattan every year city since
1992. In San Francisco last year, some 500 people took part. This
year marks the first chance for iPod users to participate, as Kline
will make MP3 files of the piece available on his website.

Participants are invited to bring a boombox to Mission Dolores Park
at 18th and Dolores Streets, gathering at 6:45 PM. After Kline
distributes tapes and CDs among the players, the group will begin the
piece, strolling a mile-long, predetermined route though the Mission,
Noe, and Castro districts. The event will be held rain or shine.
