Cancer, Chemicals and History THE NATION - Jon Wiener (Feb 7, 2005 issue)

Twenty of the biggest chemical companies in the United States have launched
a campaign to discredit two historians who have studied the industry's
efforts to conceal links between their products and cancer.

In an unprecedented move, attorneys for Dow, Monsanto, Goodrich, Goodyear,
Union Carbide and others have subpoenaed and deposed five academics who
recommended that the University of California Press publish the book Deceit
and Denial: The Deadly Politics of Industrial Pollution, by Gerald
Markowitz and David Rosner. The companies have also recruited their own
historian to argue that Markowitz and Rosner have engaged in unethical
conduct. Markowitz is a professor of history at the CUNY Grad Center;
Rosner is a professor of history and public health at Columbia University
and director of the Center for the History and Ethics of Public Health at

The San Francisco Tree Council, Inc.

October 10, 2005

San Francisco Board of Supervisors
1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 264
San Francisco, CA 94102-4689

Re: Support for Supervisor Daly’s Significant / Landmark Tree Legislation (050689)

Dear Supervisors,

The San Francisco Tree Council (SFTC) strongly urges you to support Supervisor Daly’s Significant and Landmark Tree Legislation   SFTC agrees there is a need for public education on the value of trees. This can easily be done on PUC bills.  Funds can be directed to help the elderly community homeowners to maintain significant public and private trees, and they can also be exempt from fees.

It is not enough to just plant trees; we need to preserve and protect what we plant.

Supervisor Daly’s tree protection legislation originated from senior citizens outrage, that the city has no laws or public process, to protect their valuable significant or landmark trees, when elderly citizens pass on or have to move, and big real estate developers buy their property, cutting down the trees that contributed greatly to their daily health and happiness, and the character of their neighborhood. They know that they will not live long enough to see saplings reach significant size or quality.

Trees reflect not only the health and wealth of our City, but how it cares, equally, for all its citizens’ quality of life. Trees should stand for something deeper, richer and more lasting, their reviving influences of beautiful nature should promotes a healthy, wealthy democracy.  Our trees should be an extraordinary public resource enjoyed by everyone, and an exceptional civic pride appreciated and embraced by all.

Supervisor Daly’s Significant Tree Ordinance will add much needed protection for Significant Trees and Landmark Trees, as well as educate and heighten awareness of the value of our public and private trees, one of our most valuable resources, our community urban forest.

It is time for the City to take care of the urban forest as a whole. We cannot afford different standards for different factions, it's not only unfair but it is confusing on the bureaucratic and individual level.

I trust you will move forward in the direction, which affords the most benefits to all San Franciscans and shows the citizens that the Board of Supervisors understands the nobility of our trees is vital.

Most Sincerely,

Carolyn Blair
Executive Director
Carolyn [at] SFTreeCouncil.org

Working Together to Preserve & Protect Our Community Urban Forest
For the Nourishment of the Soul, Consolation for the Heart
And Inspiration for the Mind

Alert! Help is need now to pass Supervisor Daly’s Tree Protection Legislation. Call all Supervisors NOW with your support!

You might or might not be aware that trees are under attack in the City. Recreation and Parks proposes to cut down more than eight hundred trees (800) in McLaren Park alone; a thousand trees (1,000) have already been cut down on Bayview Hill; sixteen hundred (1,600) trees are slated for removal on Mt. Davidson. Many thousands more will have been cut down in the Presidio.

Tomorrow, the Board of Supervisors has proposed legislation before it for the protection of trees and the urban forest in the City.

Supervisor Chris Daly proposed the initial legislation and Supervisor Jake McGoldrick proposed lesser protections for trees. John Avalos of Supervisor Daly's office is working to meld the two pieces to give strong protection to trees on both public and private property. Trees in parks are not covered on either piece of legislation. A comparison of the two pieces of legislation is attached.

Supervisor Daly's legislation is a start at protecting trees but help is needed in having it passed.

Supervisor Maxwell of District 10 is sympathetic to saving trees but has concerns about the impact on homeowners. She was leaning towards supporting an integrated piece, but may not now. She asked for some amendments of beefing up the public education effort for ethnic and elderly communities as well as exempting low income, elderly homeowners from fees. Supervisor Daly will most likely introduce these amendments on his legislation, but her actual support is unclear.

If you can support Supervisor Daly's version of the tree protection, please call Supervisor Maxwell's office, 554-7670, and ask her to support the Daly legislation. Supervisor Maxwell's email address: Sophie.Maxwell [at] sfgov.org. Calling is the best method of sending a message.

# Compelling New Evidence on the JFK Assassination
Special Taking Aim broadcast http://takingaim.info
Tuesday, October 11, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET (noon to 3:00 p.m. PT)
WBAI-NY, 99.5 FM, http://www.wbai.org for real-time Internet stream

New evidence establishing the role of the CIA in the assassination of
President John F. Kennedy.

Discussion with Joan Mellen, author of "A Farewell to Justice: Jim Garrison,
JFK's assassination and the case that should have changed history."
published by Potomac Books.

The book is our Fund Drive premium for your $125 contribution to WBAI.
Exceptional book, compelling new evidence - a must for your library.

Over seven years, Joan Mellen interviewed over 1000 people, many of them
coming forward for the first time, and analyzed documents from the National
Assassination Archive. With precision and insight, Mellen moves on from a
review of the evidence compiled by New Orleans District Attorney Jim
Garrison to uncovering new evidence that substantiates the role of the CIA
in the assassination and its cover-up.

Mellen interviewed the actual participants in the plot to kill JFK,
documented their meetings, plans and their implementation.

A taste of what is new in this book and what will be discussed during the
fund drive special:

* Lee Harvey Oswald was not a loner but a government agent who worked for
the CIA, the New Orleans FBI office and for U.S. Customs. Oswald was closely
connected to CIA-sponsored anti-Castro figures in New Orleans, including
Clay Shaw (who Garrison prosecuted), David Ferrie and a Cuban associate of
Shaw’s at the International Trade Mart named Juan Valdes.

* Clay Shaw and David Ferrie, both Garrison suspects and CIA operatives,
implemented the assassination by helping frame Oswald as the murderer.
Mellen proves for the first time that Ferrie, an aviator, flew to Dallas the
week of the assassination with the help of a loan that was co-signed by
Shaw. Ferrie’s job was to fly the assassins away to safety late on Friday,
November 22nd.

* Proof that Oswald was set up as a patsy. Thomas Edward Beckham, was
trained at CIA to be the patsy should Oswald choose not to cooperate.

* Robert Kennedy was aware of Oswald and his connection to the FBI before
the assassination. RFK put Oswald under surveillance and had his Cuban
associates tracking Oswald’s movements during the summer of 1963, new facts
never before revealed.

* Proof that the cover-up began north of Baton Rouge before the shooting in
Dallas when Oswald, in the company of Shaw and Ferrie, applied for a job at
the mental hospital in Jackson, LA. Mellen has the only known interview with
the director of the hospital at that time, Dr. Frank Silva.

* The FBI, including “Deep Throat” Mark Felt, undermined the Garrison
investigation. Government documents reveal that the FBI and CIA worked
actively with a number of journalists who “covered” the Garrison
investigation, including reporters with Newsweek and The Saturday Evening
Post, as well as a government operative ostensibly employed by NBC
television. An FBI document reveals J. Edgar Hoover directing his field
offices to “tell Garrison nothing!”

Joan Mellen, Temple University professor and author, is well-known for her
biographies of Lillian Hellman and Dashiell Hammett, Kay Boyle, Marilyn
Monroe and Bob Knight. She has written seventeen books and has contributed
to the Baltimore Sun, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Philadelphia
Inquirer, among many publications. In 2004, Temple University awarded her
one of their most coveted “Great Teacher” awards, for outstanding
achievement, in particular in the graduate writing program.

# 10/11: Founder of School of the Americas Watch Speaks in Berkeley (berkeley west)

Father Roy Bourgeois, Founder of the School of the Americas Watch and a well-known dynamic speaker, will be in Berkeley on October 11 to talk about his commitment to the closure of the SOA and the steps underway in this country and Latin America to close down this notorious school.

He will be speaking on Tuesday, October 11, 4:00 p.m., at the YWCA in Berkeley, 2600 Bancroft, corner of Bancroft/Bowditch. This free event is sponsored by UC Berkeley's Caucas for International Awareness.

Father Roy has spent the past 25 years working to close the School of Americas in an attempt to put an end to the death and suffering inflicted by the school’s policies. The School of the Americas (SOA), recently renamed Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers. Soldiers are trained in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. Graduates of the school have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people, targeting educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor.

Father Roy has been instrumental in building awareness of and support for the closure of the School of the Americas. His work is recognized at both the grassroots level as well as by those involved in creating U.S. policy. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, in a letter of support for the work of Father Roy states, “I speak for many who have the utmost respect and admiration for the work of Father Bourgeois, whose dedication to peace and justice has brought international attention to the atrocities supported by the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation formerly known as the School of the Americas. His dedication to using peaceful protests and education has brought awareness and respect to the cause”.

The national holiday of Columbus Day marks the celebration by the white system of over five hundred years of genocide and slavery against indigenous and African people and the stolen wealth and lives that make up what we know as the United States of America.

We are organizing a local conference to build our work in the white community in under the leadership of the African liberation movement and in solidarity with oppressed peoples' struggles on the planet.
The Uhuru Holiday Pie Campaign is a traditional fundraiser for the African People's Education and Defense Fund that invites hundreds of people to sell, bake and buy pies in support of the African community. Make a difference during these coming holidays and express your solidarity.

# School of the Americas Watch Meeting Thu Oct 13 7:00 PM
School of the Americas (SOA) [in 2001 renamed the “Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation”] is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia.

For those who do not know about the School of the Americas, here is some information copied from the School for the Americas Watch website http://www.soaw.org

Initially established in Panama in 1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Former Panamanian President, Jorge Illueca, stated that the School of the Americas was the “biggest base for destabilization in Latin America.” The SOA, frequently dubbed the “School of Assassins,” has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country where its graduates have returned.

Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people. Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, “disappeared,” massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained at the School of Assassins.

On October 13, 2005, 7 p.m. at the Northminster Church (across from ECHS) the East Bay chapter of the School of the Americas Watch is sponsoring a program to inform El Cerrito community members about the work of School of the Americas Watch.

The program will have two focuses:

• Richmond High students and RHS teacher Buzz Sherwood will present a video they created over a three-year period about the School of the Americas that includes interviews conducted at Fort Benning, Georgia, with citizens protesting the SOA and advocating that it be closed.

# Fri Oct 14 9:00 PM Encounter Studio 555 De Haro Street #120 party 8pm - late
Please join us for the grand opening of Encounter Studio, a new art/performance space in Potrero Hill. We're building a small theater and sound studio in a live/work space. The building used to be a soap factory, now it's all offices except for one other artist collective: False Profit are our neighbors.
Although the theater isn't finished yet, we have renovated the space enough to hold parties, film screenings, and music performances. Our 1,000 sq. ft. performance area can easily support an audience of 50 or more, with high-end video projection in a comfortable atmosphere. Now it's time to celebrate!
In the earlier part of the night we will have an artists' salon featuring our own work. Simran will have his "Haunted Garden" sound installation running. Hallie will perform interactive improv with audience participation. I'll show some of my evil mind control video art. There will be a couple other surprises along the way.
After midnight, there will be partying and dancing until whenever. We'll provide snacks and some alcohol, but it might not be a bad idea to bring reinforcements.

# GI Rights Hotline Training October 15
A crucial element to slowing the military machine is helping individual GIs get out of the military!  As CCCO has done since 1948, we are supporting individuals in their resistance and opposition to war.  In particular, we are standing with a group of people —GI’s whose questioning and resistance are increasing and becoming better known

The GI Rights hotline is staffed by a network of organizations throughout the United States and in Germany.  In 2004 we received 32,000 calls from people who needed help obtaining discharge from the military.  Increasingly, people are also using email to contact us and we sent about 3,000 emails in response to email queries.

The hotline provides accurate, comprehensive, and objective information on draft registration, military discharges, civil rights in the military, and involuntary activation and deployment of military personnel.  The work we do and the information we disseminate are known to enlisted people in numbers far greater then the thousands with whom we communicate personally.

We are seeking additional military counselors to volunteer on the Hotline.  Tasks include answering live phone calls, returning phone messages, responding to email inquiries, and making referrals to relevant organizations and individuals.  Volunteers make an initial one- year commitment of at least 2 hours of service per week.

CCCO will be holding a GI Rights volunteer training on
Saturday, October 15, 2005 9am – 5pm
405 14th St., Suite #205 Oakland, CA
Pr-registration required by September 26
For more information or to register for the training, call
510-465-1617 or 888-231-2226
Or email steve [at] objector.org
http://www.objector.org/gitraining.html
The training will provide an overview of all the discharges, AWOL practices and regulations, and  legal and ethical issues in hotline counseling.

# Graveyard Games San Francisco Saturday, October 15 2 PM - 3:20 PM FREE

Graveyard Games SAN FRANCISCO

You're never too dead to play.

On Saturday October 15, 2005, Graveyard Games will be in Colma, San
Francisco's very own City of the Dead, so you can meet the living and
play with the dead.

You're invited to the Italian Cemetery to get to know your local
dearly departed, pay your respects, and learn Tombstone Hold 'Em-the
secret poker game you can only play in a cemetery.

Instructions

1. Arrive at the Italian Cemetery (540 F Street, Colma, CA 94014, 2
blocks from Colma BART station) on Saturday October 15 between 1:30
PM and 2:00 PM.

2. Look for your host near the main entrance, under the white arch.
She'll be holding a deck of cards. She will have further instructions
and supplies for you.

3. Bring a single flower to place on a grave to show some respect,
and to signal that you're one of us.

4. Take a few minutes to explore the cemetery. Look for any poker
chips left on tombs. You'll need these to play.

5. Be sure to look for the grave of someone you can prove died on
your birthday. You can use that tombstone as a Joker during the game.

6. Tombstone Hold 'Em Tournament begins at 2 PM. Here's a tip: learn
the rules (http://www.lastcallpoker.com/allin/rules.aspx) before you
come. We'll have instructions on hand for any friends you bring along.

7. For non-poker players, there will be other creative, playful
things to do. And expect a few surprises.

8. The winner is crowned at 3 PM. No fancy prizes, but lots of
respect, and maybe a special memento from beyond the grave. Plus,
everyone can keep the chips they earn as a souvenir.

9. After 3 PM, you're invited to nearby Globe Tavern (7379 Mission
St) to raise a glass to the players you're leaving underground at the
Italian Cemetery.

By the way, if anyone asks--you're here for the last call.

# 10/15: George Bush Going Away Party - Evening of Political Comedy (downtown / civic / van ness
2nd Annual Sat, Oct 15th @ 8pm
Partial proceeds benefit CCCO's "Military Out of Our Schools" program

Featuring a multicultural variety of political comedians from both New York and San Francisco:
-Bill Santiago (The Latino Laugh Festival; Comedy Central's Premium Blend)
-Diane Amos (The Pine Sol Lady; film actress)
-Lisa Geduldig (Producer of Kung Pao Kosher Comedy, Funny Girlz, Charo)
-Scott Blakeman (New York's premier political comic)
-Alana Devich (Semi-finalist in Comedy Central's "Laugh Riots" competition)
-Ross Turner (Veteran of several "Bush Bash" political comedy shows)
-Aundre the Wonderwoman (Anti-death penalty advocate by day; comic by night)

Last year's sold out show, on the eve of the presidential "elections" was a success but failed to send Bush back to Crawford so we're trying again. With his approval rating sinking to a new low of 38%, coupled with his record on Iraq, and his slow and bungling response to Hurricane Katrina, we figured we'd try once more to usher Bush out and send him back home while continuing to provide needed political comic relief to the citizens of the Bay Area. Medical studies show that laughter IS the best medicine; endorphins will be handed out in the aisles.

# Sex-Positive Parenting Salon and Discussion Sun Oct 16 7pm
Center for Sex and Culture, 398 11th Street at Harrison

Please join us for a forum discussion on sex-positive parenting.

This workshop is intended for parents who have chosen to be sex-positive and to share sex-positive values with their children. We live in a society with many mixed messages about sexuality. Many of us rejected our parents’ values in order to become sex-positive people. Now, raising children of our own, we find we are unsure how to communicate our values to our children and what information we should share or not share.

Because the event will be an open forum, we will address whatever issues individuals bring to the table. However, some of the general issues we are sure to discuss are polyamory; Paganism and alternative spirituality; interfaith unions; bisexual, homosexual, and heterosexual partnerships.

This event has arisen out of the concerns individuals have brought to the Center for Sex and Culture and the ideas of our current intern, Michelle Mueller. Michelle, student of the Graduate Theological Union, has a special interest in developing mentorship and sexual education programs for Pagan youth. Michelle co-founded a student Pagan group at Bryn Mawr College and was Assistant Coordinator for Teen Programs at Circle Sanctuary’s Free Spirit Gathering 2005. In the 2005-2006 academic year, Michelle intends to volunteer at UC Berkeley as a religious advisor for Wiccan and Pagan undergraduates. Although Michelle is not a parent, she enjoys mediating between Pagan or sex-positive parents and their teenagers.

Please bring any books or resources you think other parents would appreciate.

Here's all the detail about the 10/16 day-long workshop on legal issues for sex workers:
A Legal Defense Seminar for Adult Entertainers, featuring Harvard educated criminal defense attorney Katya Komisaruk, will be held at the Center For Sex & Culture on Sunday October 16th.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
This seminar will teach adult entertainers about the laws of California as they relate to the adult entertainment business. Subjects covered include: what the laws are so that you don’t break them, how to handle encounters with law enforcement agents, safety tactics during arrest, how to use your right to remain silent and see a lawyer, resisting interrogation, arrest and search warrants, rights of non-US citizens, and reporting police misconduct. There will be lectures, Q&A sessions, role playing drills, and you will also get one-on-one time with the attorney who can review your personal ad and website copy.

Join Lea Bender on her return journey to a small mountaintop village in Ghana where she finds herself participating in possession rituals with a group of African spirit mediums. Second Sight weaves live solo performance with video and soundscape to tell this incredible true story. Through characters from her time in Ghana (including the lively and often comical spirits themselves), Lea opens the door to questions about belief, spirituality and the unknown for both herself and her audiences. # FACTORY FARMING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Moving Toward Sustainable Agriculture
A FREE Event Featuring Farmer Harold Brown

Tuesday, October 18 from 7-9pm at the Marin Humane Society. RSVP to 415-506-6288.
Harold Brown, former cattle farmer turned farm animal advocate featured in the new, award-winning documentary "Peaceable Kingdom," will speak about the deleterious impacts of factory farming on the environment and the alternatives that exist. He will also present the benefits of moving away from animal agriculture to a plant-based agricultural production system.

Harold Brown was raised on a cattle farm in Michigan and spent half of his life in animal agriculture. Now, having metamorphosed from a "beef" farmer to a vegan farm animal advocate, he works to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices and "Put the Family Back in Farming."
