Example of Racist Media Caught by Web Surfer During Hurricane Katrina Coverage

by emergingminds.org
New Orleans, LA (emergingminds.org) - Among the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, one web surfer on an Atlanta message board did not let the disaster blind him of how racist the media in American remains. A message board poster with the alias “Noah_The_African” pointed out a prime example of how America’s racist media will quickly portray African Americans in a different light than White Americans even in a time of crisis.
“Noah_The_African” keenly pin pointed images posted on Yahoo! News on August 30th that were definitely worth a thousand words.

I could go into great detail and analysis of this situation; however I will quote one of my favorite Blogs “Black Perspective and Introspection”

“With the recent events in the south we are seeing coverage of looting and there are cries of bias being heard from Black folk in how the media is covering the looting. We all know New Orleans has a high percentage of Black people and a great many of those Black folk are poor and were unable to leave as those with transportation (cars, trucks etc..)did.

In light of that, the majority of those left behind were the poor and the poor tend to capitalize on any opportunity that arises that allows them to attain material items. The aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina is no different in this regard. People are looting, some of the things being taken are essentials and some are non-essentials.

However the one thing that is consistent is the bias in the media in their coverage of the looters right down to the wording used for two people doing the very same thing. In the following news links you will find evidence of this. In the one with the Black child, his actions are referred to as looting while the one with the white folk is referred to as finding.”

This example of America’s racist media is just the tip of the iceberg. CNN, FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, etc. have given America a dose of one sided coverage of African Americans shown only as criminals rather than desperate victims fighting for survival as their White counterparts are shown.

In addition, the effect of the media’s coverage of African Americans throughout this crisis called by Hurricane Katrina is beginning to upset the psyche of the White Americans who are already angry at Black people over their fight for reparations and Affirmative Action.

On August 31st an angry White American named Michael Champagny sent hate mail to Emerging Minds expressing his disgust at the lawless and greedy Black population in America. The email went as follows:

“Good morning:

It disgusts me and most other whites that blacks have used the slavery issue to solicit money from these institutions. I suppose as far as blacks are concerned the issue of slavery will never be over no matter how much money you are given or how many benefits you are granted. I am curious if black organizations have tried to solicit money from Wal-Mart and if successful are those organizations planning on returning any of the funds in wake of all that blacks have looted from their stores in Louisiana recently as seen plainly on the news?

M. Champagny”
