NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR GI RESISTERS

SUPPORT NAVY REFUSER PABLO PAREDES & ARMY OBJECTOR KEVIN BENDERMAN On the day before their scheduled court martial for refusing to participate in the Iraq war and occupation, tell the U.S. military:

* RESISTING ILLEGAL WAR & OCCUPATION IS NOT A CRIME * RESPECT CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION

San Francisco Bay Area Support Rally TUES MAY 10, 12 NOON War Memorial Veterans Building in SF 401 Van Ness, between Hayes and McAllister, San Francisco (2 blocks from Civic Center BART)

http://www.CourageToResist.org

After refusing to honor their conscientious objection, the U.S. military will bring Pablo Paredes (in San Diego, California) and Kevin Benderman (in Fort Stewart, Georgia) before a military court martial tribunal on May 11, 2005. They face military jail, and forfeiture of pay and benefits.

On December 6, 2004, Navy Petty Officer Pablo Paredes refused to board his Navy ship and participate in the Iraq war and occupation.

On January 5, 2005, Kevin Benderman refused to deploy for a second tour of duty in Iraq with the Army's Third Infantry Division. At the same time seventeen other soldiers from his unit went AWOL, two tried to kill themselves and one had a relative shoot him in the leg to avoid deploying.

At the time of his refusal, Pablo said he hoped his protest might inspire other GI's to refuse to take part in the war. Thousands of U.S. troops are refusing to fight the war and occupation in Iraq. We are committed to asserting widespread public pressure in defense of GI's choice to follow their conscience instead of the dictates of the State. We believe this is a key way to help end the tragic war and occupation of Iraq. Please join us and do what you can on this National Day of Action for GI Resisters; organize a public support event, pass this e-mail on to your friends, family and associates, send letters of support (websites below), etc. Please send us a note letting us know of what you have planned: courage [at] riseup.net

COURAGE TO RESIST is a new group of concerned community members, veterans and military families organizing support for military objectors to illegal war and occupation and underlying policies of empire. We have adopted a people power strategy to weaken the pillars that support the Iraq war and occupation by supporting GI resistance, which together with counter-recruitment and draft resistance work can remove the supply of obedient troops.

More info on Pablo: http://www.swiftsmartveterans.com Kevin and Monica Benderman will be speaking in San Francisco on Saturday, April 30, 2005, 2:00-4:00 PM http://www.bendermandefense.org

BUSTAN speakers will discuss "Development" and the impact of "Making the
Desert Bloom" in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Negev, the southern region of Israel populated by Bedouin and Jews, is
plagued by divisions. There is a fierce demographic war with Jewish settlers
relocating to the area, a public health crisis from rampant industrial
expansion, and disproportionately high rates of unemployment, crime, and
drug abuse. Beyond camels, coffee, and carpets, Israel's exoticized Bedouin
minority has been divided by geopolitics and tribalism, and is striving to
withstand the forceful currents of urbanization and modernization. Under the
auspices of development, state-land use, stringent planning and zoning, and
selective resource allocation,

Jewish and Arab presenters include DEVORAH BROUS, founder and director of
Bustan. Devorah has spent the past 12 years organizing projects in Israel
and the Occupied Palestinian Territories to struggle against the Occupation,
and to promote fair allocation of public resources. Devorah holds masters
degrees in Israel Studies and Peace/Conflict Studies, with a concentration
in conflict management. Most recently, Devorah designed and orchestrated the
Medwed Project, a program which culminated in the construction of a
solar-powered, straw-bale medical clinic in the "unrecognized" Bedouin
village, Wadi el Na'am, to serve its 5,500 citizens.  Devorah has authored
numerous articles and poems about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and
performs spoken word.  Devorah resides in Jerusalem.

For over a decade, DR. SALMAN ELBEDOUR has been researching, speaking,
writing, and teaching about the Bedouin educational system in Israel as well
as the psychological impact of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Israeli,
Palestinian, and Bedouin youth. Dr. Elbedour serves as the coordinator of
the Urban School Psychology program at Howard University, School of
Education, Washington, DC. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses
for seven years at Ben Gurion University (in the Negev) and Bir Zeit
University (West-Bank). Elbedour has published extensively on social,
political, health and identity issues related to Bedouin of the Negev and
Palestinian communities.

In 1973, DR. KHALIL ABU RABIA founded the Arab List for Bedouin and
Villagers, a Knesset faction that is currently part of the United Arab List.
Abu Rabia has been at the forefront of the Bedouin rights movement for 35
years working with the Forum for National Consensus, Peace Now, and Gush
Shalom. Abu Rabia has a Ph.D. in Islamic Law and is currently a lecturer and
researcher on subjects including Bedouin Muslim Law, the Relationship
Between Traditional Islamic law and Secular State law, and Spiritual Aspects
of Bedouin Land Rights. Khalil is a professor of Middle East Studies at Ben
Gurion University and Sapir College, a researcher at the Chaim Herzog
Center, and resides in Beer Sheva.

# Jack Laws and the Creation of a Sierra Field Guide Thu May 12 7:30 PM FREE
San Francisco Naturalist Society general meeting. Naturalist and artist John (Jack) Muir Laws is creating an illustrated field guide to more than 1,200 species of plants and animals of the Sierra Nevada. This comprehensive and easy to use guide will allow botanists to identify the insects that come to their flowers, birders to identify the trees in which the birds perch, or hikers to identify the stars overhead at night. Jack will present an illustrated lecture about the natural history of the Sierra Nevada, and the process of creating a field guide. He will also bring original illustrations that have been painted in the field. Jack has studied the natural history of the Sierra for many years. He is trained as a wildlife biologist and is an associate of the California Academy of Sciences. He has spent the last three summers painting Sierra wildflowers from life. During 2004 alone, Jack spent more than 80 days in the mountains working on illustrations for this book. His illustrations capture the feeling of the living plant, while also including details critical for identification. In the summer of 2004, Laws published Sierra Birds: a Hiker's Guide. He is also a regular contributor to Bay Nature magazine with his "Naturalists Notebook" column.

# May 12: HOLCOMBE WALLER - CD Release Show for "Troubled Times," with Special Guests.
Swedish American Hall above Cafe Du Nord, 2170 Market at Now, 7PM door, $12
San Francisco native Holcombe Waller is an independent artist now living in Portland, Oregon. With musical collaborator Ben Landsverk, Holcombe crafts lilting melodies from his politically charged lyrics, set within intricate arrangements of warm acoustic guitars, rumbling electric keyboards and the occasional banjo. "Troubled Times" is a direct response to the current disaster otherwise known as the Bush Administration. The song "No Enemy" is an open letter to Condoleezza Rice ("There is no enemy coming / But you're making enemies, Condoleezz"), while "Literally the End of the World" portrays a suburban homebody lamenting armeggedon as he's putting out "newspaper stacks wrapped on the curb as [his] offering." # Everything You Think You Know About Prisons is Wrong
Thu May 12 8 PM $3-$15 sliding scale, no one turned away
Panel Discussion:
Everything You Think You Know About Prisons is Wrong
$3-$15 sliding scale admission, no one turned away for lack of funds

Within the context of Trevor Paglen's exhibition, Cynthia Chandler (Justice Now), Rachel Herzing (Critical Resistance), Doug Spalding (California Prison Focus), and AC Thompson (SF Bay Guardian) tackle the issues of globalization, imperialism and the prison industrial complex. The panel will look at how the prison system is not merely comprised of the prisons themselves, but how it is a fundamental structure of our society's organization.

Recording Carceral Landscapes
Trevor Paglen
through May 28, 2005
Gallery Hours: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 1-6 PM

Recording Carceral Landscapes documents a series of interventions into sites associated with the Prison Industrial Complex. Trevor Paglen records numerous encounters using a set of specialized gadgets to surveil the people and places that drive California's massive prison system. From Pelican Bay State Prison to the California Correctional Peace Officers Association headquarters, and from the inner chambers of Sacramento to the financial centers of the Bay Area, Paglen shows how mass-imprisonment has insinuated itself into the very fabric of the state, and how prisons themselves are only one part of the Prison Industrial Complex. Several multimedia installations will be on display using images, video, and audio recordings culled from the broader project. The exhibition will also showcase a series of prison re-design proposals that the artist has produced in collaboration with architects Carrie Foster, Matt Wittman, and the Nsumi group.

# Greetings All!

The “Celebrating Women’s Leadership in Sustainable Development” event is coming together beautifully! Thank you all for your help! We will be having a planning meeting this Friday, May 13th (is it already May?!?) at 5:30 at the Pacific Environment office at 311 California St. Suite 650. (A few blocks from the Embarcadero BART station—office is on California at Battery). For those of you who can’t make it in person, there will be a call-in option:

Conference call number: 1 888 276 4201. When prompted the participant code is 544539.

We hope you can make it!

Again, we are thrilled to work with you all on this important project celebrating women! Thank you all for your interest, and please send me a quick email letting me know whether or not you can make it.

Attached is the most recent flyer for the event, and below is a text version. PLEASE take a moment to spread this info to your networks and listserves, and if you are a co-sponsor, please post to your websites and alert your membership if you have not done so already.

In addition, we are building a Clothesline of Environmental Heroes which will feature dozens of the incredible women who are working around the world throughout the venue space. This will recognize women working on the frontlines in their communities and who may not otherwise have the opportunity to be honored. We will hang their pictures and descriptions on a clothesline that will break up the space.

We would like to ask that you and/or your organization help contribute several pictures and stories of outstanding women you have worked with over the years. The more you can send us, the better! This may be something you can put together relatively quickly—it may also be a great volunteer/intern project if you so choose.

If you can, please send us these as one-page documents—with a woman’s picture and “story”. These can be any women you have worked with who you find represent leadership in any of Dr. Maathai’s three arenas of environmental sustainability, democracy, or human rights with a paragraph description below.

If you haven’t already, please submit your pictures/stories to Kirsten [at] globalexchange.org or

# Sat May 14 Marin Living Foods Pot Luck and Speaker Gathering

Pot Luck and Speaker Gathering by the
Marin Living Foods Community
Our Featured Speaker Will Be DR. KARIN DINA

Karin Dina's enthusiasm and study of health has spanned 1 ½ decades. While
in college, she experienced fatigue that no doctor was able to help her
with. Instead, she decided to find the path to health on her own. She read
countless books and did much research on achieving health over the next few
years. After becoming a vegetarian, she experienced an increase in her
energy level, but it was not until she started eating a largely raw diet
that her fatigue completely abated. In addition, she felt an abundance of
energy that she had never felt before in her life. Since 1990, she has
followed a vegan diet consisting of 80-100% raw foods and has devoted her
life to educating people on how to achieve optimum wellness through diet,
exercise, and emotional balance.

Karin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of
Connecticut. In 1997, she graduated from the University of Colorado with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Magna Cum Laude honors. She studied
naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University, where she was an honors student,
and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic West with Magna Cum Laude
honors in March of 2005. Throughout her undergraduate and graduate
coursework, she studied advanced nutrition and nutritional biochemistry
extensively. Upon receiving her California chiropractic license, she will be
practicing chiropractic and nutrition counseling at Vitality Health Center
of Marin in San Rafael, CA.

Her talk for the Marin Living Foods May potluck will include raw and living
food recipe demonstrations with information on the scientific reasons for
eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts. Please
join us for this fun and informative talk! For more info please go to:
http://www.drdina.com or http://www.vitalityhealthmarin.com

When : On Saturday,
May 14th, from 6 til 9pm,
Where: 1 Wellbrock
Hts. San Rafael, CA 94903 (directions below)
Cost: $3 donation and Raw food dish to serve 8, per person

6:00 pm start. PLEASE try to be on time. We eat at 6:15 and our speakers
generally start at 7:00

Please bring a raw food dish of your choice to serve 8 people making sure to
review the guidelines for food below.
*********** Guidelines for Food ***********
Please prepare your dishes with raw, organic (at least pesticide/herbicide
free), vegetarian (vegan - no animal products) ingredients. Nothing cooked,
steamed, baked or otherwise heated above 105 degrees is appropriate for this
potluck. Dehydrated foods and dried fruits are fine as long as they have
been prepared within the temperature guideline above. Tofu and most seaweeds
are not raw foods. Please pay attention to what might go into your dish;
oils, vinegar, spices, salt...is it raw, healthy, etc. Could it be added
later at the potluck by those who want it?
Some attendees have been on the raw path for 20+ years so we must adhere to
these seemingly strict guidelines. There are some wonderful raw foods
cookbooks available at the local health food stores for new ideas, or you
can go to http://www.living-foods.com for lots of great recipes. Beautiful leafy
greens and veggies presented in a wide variety of (raw) ways are always a
winner. Be creative, enjoy yourself and have fun! If in doubt - leave it
out! Call or email if you need ideas or have questions.

Now you can send your friends to <http://WWW.MARINRAWFOOD.COM> for potluck
details.

******* Plates and Silverware *******
Please bring your own plate and silverware. Not only is it ecologically
beneficial, it's a much more pleasing dining experience.
Directions: Aldersgate Church is in San Rafael, Marin County, California. It
sits on a hill overlooking Kaiser hospital.
It can be reached by US Highway 101 north of San Francisco, exiting at
Freitas Parkway just north of the Marin County Civic center, a noted Frank
Lloyd Wright designed structure. Following Freitas Parkway west, turn left
on Las Gallinas, then right on Nova Albion Way. Turn right again on
Montecillo, passing Kaiser Hospital. Turn left on Trellis and left again at
the crest of the hill, which is Wellbrock Heights. Follow the street into
the parking area. Map available at http://www.1wellbrock.org

# TEMPORARY WILD ZONE 14th, 15th and 16th-May 2005, VALENCIA NEAR THE VALENCIA CITY, IN MEDITERRANEAN COAST (SPAIN) ANTICIVILIZATION GATHERING. We think that there can be two kinds of debates in the morning. First a debate that should be introduced by someone involved in the issue debated, as a way to initiate the meeting. After a short break, a more general meeting to share ideas and experiences related to the issue that has been debated before. In the afternoon we should gather together to share and know experiences that are working already. Later, the practical workshops. May 14th:Morning: welcome and the first meeting to organize the programme or activities. Afternoon: debating the development policy. Hold by someone from the Itoiz or another big infrastructure. Practical workshops. May 15th:Morning: debating the action and the ways to act it. Hold by someone from the struggle against OMG. Afternoon: International relations. The introduction will be in charge to someone involved in supporting the Papua people or the Mapuches. Practical workshops. May 16th:Morning: the possibility of making an international ant civilization web. Afternoon: General meeting to exchange and share. Starting the farewell. And performance neo-luddite. We have already set up some of the practical workshops: making soap, cryptography without computers, applied botanic knowledge, mankala, organic agriculture, energetic crisis, actual applications to spearthrower. Vegetarian food, with a vegan option will be prepared, and we are going to need help for making it. You need to bring plate and fork. And because we are going to camp, you need to bring your tent and sleeping bag. The night time will be for personal relations and fun. MORE INFO WRITE TO llavors [at] nodo50.org http://nodo50.org

NextAid is a Los Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for African children orphaned as a result of AIDS. By partnering with other organizations in the production of music benefits and awareness-raising activities, NextAid channels emergency and long-term aid to African children in need. Proceeds from the event will go towards the building of an earth-friendly multi-purpose center for Youth for a Vision, a non-profit organization comprised of teens mostly orphaned by AIDS who use theater and music to teach AIDS awareness to their peers, literally saving lives.  This center will serve as a template for future centers throughout Africa. One of the center’s buildings will be named after Wert Terry.

# Fred Burks' Fascinating Journey Sunday, May 15
3pm Friends House 7pm Christ Church UMC, Santa Rosa

Dear Santa Rosa friends, My son Fred Burks has become somewhat of a celebrity through his website on government cover-ups and the living of his values, resulting in a long front page article in the Wall Street Journal February 22 (viewable at his website http://www.WantToKnow.info

He will be speaking in Santa Rosa Sunday May 15 at 3pm in Friends House and 7pm at Christ Church United Methodist (Yulupa off Hoen). His subject is described below and a second email will include a chronology of his interpreting experiences from March 1995 to November 2004 when he terminated his contract with the State Department largely due to a new secrecy clause he would have been required to sign.

Fred has served as State Department interpreter (Indonesian language) for President Bill Clinton and VP Al Gore, Secretary of State Albright, Indonesian President Megawati, World Bank President Wolfenson, Asst. Sec of Defense Wolfowitz, and President George W. Bush (several times), among many others.

Feel free to publicize these talks and invite folks from the Peace and Justice Center, ACLU, the Santa Rosa Interfaith Ministerial Association, the Santa Rosa Bill of Rights Defense Committee, Sierra Club, and others to come on Sunday the 15th at one of the two times. Hope to see you on the 15th.

Best regards,
Paul Burks
United Methodist Minister (retired)
Friends House Resident
684 Benicia Drive #7
Santa Rosa, CA 95409
707-576-6653
Fred Burks is the son of Methodist minister Paul Burks and a former presidential interpreter. Fred will discuss his fascinating journey up the ranks of the US Department of State as an Indonesian language interpreter. Starting from his first assignment in 1986 to his resignation last November because of excessive secrecy requirements, he will discuss some of the unusual things he has seen in secret meetings. He will also share how making the important decision to reveal these secrets eventually ended in a front page article on him in the Wall Street Journal this past February.

Fred's deepest commitments are to what's best for all and to opening to divine guidance in all things. He manages several websites which are listed below:

http://www.momentoflove.org - Every person in the world has a heart http://www.WantToKnow.info - Revealing major cover-ups & working together for the good of all http://www.gcforall.org - Building a Global Community for All http://www.weboflove.org - Strengthening the Web of Love that interconnects us all

Through these websites, Fred is now working with a large network of researchers and love workers around the planet to promote personal and global transformation through love and empowerment. He has no doubt that by all working together, we are building a brighter future for ourselves and our children.

<Subscribe to Fred's email list of inspiration and education (one email per week) by sending an email to fredburks [at] earthlink.net with "subscribe 1" in the subject line. Subscribe to his list of insider information on deep cover-ups (one email every other day) by typing "subscribe deep" in the subject line.

# Saturday, May 21, the Bay Area Vegetarians will host 3 back-to-back fun and important SF events:  KFC protest, Shangri-La lunch, Red Vic letter writing party with a presentation by Nora on effective letter writing.  You're welcome to come to one, a combination, or all of them.

From 12 noon to 1 pm, we'll protest at KFC, 1900 Irving St (at 18th/19th Ave).  Make a statement for the chickens and against KFC's cruelty!  Here's the link to this event:

From 1:15 to 2:30 pm, we'll have lunch at Shangri-La (right down the street from the KFC), at 2026 Irving St (at 21st Ave).  Shangri-La is a delicious, healthy, and reasonably priced all vegetarian, almost all vegan Chinese restaurant.  Here's the link to this event:

And here's the BAV Ultimate Guide link for Shangri-La:

From 3 - 5 pm, we'll have the letter writing party at the Red Vic (which is easy to get to on public transportation from Shangri-La, and folks are welcome to head over with me).  At the letter writing parties, we write letters to politicians and businesses on a variety of issues related to animals.  The link to the letter writing party, which describes it and how to get to the Red Vic, is here: Event location: Red Victorian Peace Center, 1665 Haight Street, corner of Cole. SF

Also, from 3 - 3:30, Nora will be doing a mini-workshop on letter writing at the Red Vic.  Nora's had letters published in leading national newspapers and magazines, and this is a great opportunity for people who want to speak up for animals, but would appreciate some guidance from someone experienced in writing letters.  Nora will also stick around and be available to answer questions for the rest of the letter writing party.  Here's the link about Nora's presentation:
