Protest Against Wal-Mart in Oakland Town Hall MeetingWho: Community
Residents, Small Business Owners, Labor, Oakland Green Party, Community
Organizations, and Faith Organizations
Why: To Educate the community as to the negative impact a Wal-Mart in
East
Oakland will have. Making demands that the developers share profits
with the
community to support job, training, youth scholarships, and funding for
community clinics in the area to offset some of the negative impacts
that
Wal-Mart will have on our community.
When: Wednesday Evening, March 23rd 2005, 6:30 - 8:30 PM
Where: ILWU Local 6 Union Hall, 99 Hegenberger Road (cross street
Pardee)
WAL-MART is anti-union, anti-worker, against providing health benefits,
for
discrimination against Women and Immigrants, for wiping out Small
Businesses, and for using sweat shops and slave labor.
WAL-MART is leading the RACE TO THE BOTTOM in cities across the country
and
world and now they are bringing their destructive presence to EAST
OAKLAND
with a new store set to open in April 2005. SIMEON DEVELOPERS received
a $10
MILLION LOAN FROM LOCAL PUBLIC FUNDS to get WAL-MART here in a deal
that had
NO PUBLIC PARTICIPATION OR INPUT. Since the community did not get a
chance
to learn about this development BEFORE IT WAS APPROVED, We need to come
together and EDUCATE OURSELVES NOW on the impact that WAL-MART will
have on
our community. ALL OAKLAND GREEN PARTY MEMBERS SHOULD TURN OUT TO
SUPPORT
THIS EFFORT!
Even in the construction WAL-MART has gone back on its promise to use
local
union labor and has brought in non-union laborers from out of the
Oakland
Area to do the construction. There are 4 unions as part of this
community
coalition that are dedicated to unionizing this WAL-MART.
There have been publicly elected officials invited and some who will be
there like Nancy Nadel and other City Council members, and Barbara Lee
to
answer how this could happen in our community.
I EXPECT TO SEE AS MANY OF YOU AS POSSIBLE THERE WEDNESDAY NIGHT!
Childcare
will be provided.
