Photos From the Breakaway March

Photos from the breakaway march from the June 5 protest and march against the war and occupation of Iraq.

The breakaway broke off from the Justin Herman Plaza rally held at the end of the main march and snaked its way along the Embarcadero, by Pier 39, and then along random streets in the Fisherman's Wharf district. The march initially took over the streets, however, the marchers were soon forced onto the sidewalks. Several arrests occurred along the way. There was no apparent reason for the arrests, and one or more people were struck by a baton.

The march ended up back at the plaza and it appeared to be over. The police without any apparent reason followed the marchers into the plaza and attempted to arrest someone who ran into the dry fountain in the center of the plaza. The crowd held the police back and forced them to the edge of the plaza, and here a standoff ensued.

Previously an announcement had been made that anyone crossing a police line or touching a police officer would be subject to baton strikes and to arrest. This, apparently, was used as an excuse for what would occur later. At no point did anyone cross a police line or touch a police officer, nevertheless, when one officer charged the crowd a police riot broke out.

At the end of the riot, which occurred next to the main rally stage, there were more than 100 officers occupying a large portion of the peaceful rally area. One officer was overhead saying while he pointed his baton "go get that mother-f*cker in the white T-shirt."

At this point someone went on stage and asked the officers to leave the plaza, however, this did not stop them from arresting several people and continuing the occupation of the plaza for the next hour.
