cops protected protestors today
today at chevron-toxico
From what I saw, police were restrained -- to my amazement -- and actually ended by guarding us protesters against the "pro-USA" violent thugs who had gathered across the street from the final area of the demonstration, when many of the exhausted protesters who had been there since 5:30 AM had left (or been arrested).
My gratitude goes to the police, who handled things with a certain amount of reason today.
No one was shot with wooden dowels, "rubber" bullets, concussion grenades, pepper spray or any of that cruel and unusual punishment.
Those thugs across the street (who varied their chant by switching over to "SUV! SUV! SUV!" every one in awhile) tried to set off a violent incident at one point when they bellowed through their megaphone "Here we come!" and stomped across and started shoving and yelling in people's faces.
One of their high-class signs said "In Bush I Trust" -- just to show you the level of mentality on display.
San Ramon is no bastion of intellectual development, and is a very wealthy, privileged area -- exactly why the headquarters of Chevron-Toxico is located there in that center of smug self-satisfaction. We did in fact get some support from several locals who stood with us for a portion of the time -- one mother with two small children brought us bags of organic fruit and desserts and kept thanking us for demonstrating.
Nevertheless, the amount of pro-war feedback was marked (I wonder if Clear Channel had anything at all to do with this). You would not see this level of fanatical frothing by the population of Richmond, where most people are aware of at least the local death-dealing effects of Chevron. However, Richmond police have shown themselves capable of going violently out of control -- guess they stay more in practice by regularly working over the poor ethnic minorities who live there.
No vandalism or violence was perpetrated today, and San Ramon gets kudos for the police's overall behavior -- but the neighborhood is really scary.

peace+urgency,
As I write, the blockade of the Chevron facility in San Ramon continues.
Juan
was arrested over an hour ago and hauled off to Martinez, bravely holding
his position and his sign to the end. One by one the linked arms around him
were broken and his compatriots hauled off to the waiting police vans until,
at last, Juan sat alone, surrounded by cameras and the line of police that
had formed, one officer in each spot that had been occupied by a valiant
warrior for peace. A brass band played, a bicycle cadre passed, the
grief-stricken brown masks of the silent mothers held vigil. The banner of
the Richmond Greens stretched out to display its hopeful message to
passers-by. Fred Jackson and Henry Clark continue to wave their signs on
behalf of the children of Richmond, while hundreds of students and young
people chant in unison.
My short detention ended at 3:30 pm at the West County
Detention Facility. Cited and released. I (we) spent most
of the detenined in a tennis-court ( What a grand country!)
(San Ramon Park). Then back to the buses to Richmond.
I have no complains. Other than the stupidity of arresting
us for self-defense...the coppers were pretty decent. Except
when they went for that AA women who was leading the
chanting...That was really our of no-where.
It was good to see you there in support, and we shared the
chocolate-raisins Adrienne haded over to me at the last minute.
Met some very nice people.
Got to go. Thank you for the support.
Juan
"An injustice to one is an injustice to all"
Pastor M . My grievances have nothing to do with the demonstrations, but I've been hassled for the 5 plus years I've lived here. They are worse than the so-called "criminal element." In fact, they perpetuate criminal actions by their ill-handling of delicate situations.
Good neighbors of mine moved because of recuring thefts and what they believed was police complicity in those thefts. I am moving for very similar reasons.
In time, the population here will consist of criminals and pigs.....exactly what they want. This provides them with job security.
Thanks for this opportunity to vent.
Sincerely, David Capps
