Job Posting: AFL-CIO Media Outreach Internship

by Bernard Pollack (bpollack [at] aflcio.org)
AFL-CIO Media Outreach Internship

AFL-CIO Media Outreach Internship

Start Date: June, 2003

Duration: One Year (not a summer-long internship)

Salary: $595 per week plus benefits

Deadline for Applications: April 15, 2003

The AFL-CIO media outreach internship has a dual purpose:
(1) to help the AFL-CIO shape the public’s opinion of today’s unions through media outlets, including making workers’ voices and issues heard in all available media forums;
(2) to develop people with the skills needed to fill the labor movement’s growing need for effective communicators.
The intern position is a full-time, year-long opportunity to explore and be part of the dynamic new labor movement while developing specific media outreach skills. While the internship is based in Washington, D.C., it also includes a period of field work in organizing, political and / or legislative work.

Duties include:
· Writing press releases and media advisories;
· Developing new media contacts;
· Monitoring press coverage of unions;
· Helping to stage press conferences and events;
· Helping workers to refine their message and to make their voices heard in the media;
· Coordinating on various AFL-CIO projects including politics, trade, immigration, organizing and legislation.
· Producing background materials for internal and external use.

The media outreach intern should be an effective writer and communicator with a deep interest in addressing issues affecting working people. Previous experience with unions, student labor coalitions, community organizations allied with labor or other labor-related organizations is a plus, but not a requirement.

People of color, bilingual applicants, and women are encouraged to apply.

Please send a cover letter describing your interest and qualifications for the position, a resume, and a writing sample (1000 words max) to Nicole Smith, AFL-CIO, 815 16th Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20006 or e-mail to nsmith [at] aflcio.org.

We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
