US OUT OF THE PHILIPPINES! Thu, 1/24/02, 5PM Powell & Market SF

by Mario
The introduction of US combat troops into the Philippines marks a dangerous new phase in the US' military intervention in the Philippines.
As BAYAN International - Bay Area coordinator, I'd like to convey the following urgent message (Please circulate this notice far and wide.):

In accordance with the decision taken during last night's meeting of BAYAN representatives, we are going to join forces with those of the Filipinos For Global Justice Not War Coalition, who've taken the initiative for the first salvo.

(During last night's BAYAN meeting, we also agreed to mobilize for a follow-up demo on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 to mark the 103rd anniversary of the start of the Filipino-American War. The demo will also be at 5:00 PM in front of the Philippine Consulate at 447 Sutter St.
More details of this subsequent action will follow soon.)

The introduction of US combat troops into the Philippines marks a dangerous new phase in the US' military intervention in the Philippines.

We will mobilize all our forces, bring our own banners and distribute our own statement.

Let's mobilize all our members, friends and allies to oppose the entry of US combat troops into the Philippines.

Let's make our message felt loud and clear: YANKEE TROOPS GO HOME! US OUT OF THE PHILIPPINES!

On Thursday, January 24, 2002, let's all meet at 5:00 PM sharp at Powell & Market Sts. in front of the Powell BART station. (Please don't be late!) We will then march to the Philippine Consulate (447 Sutter St.).

NO TO U.S.-LED WAR OF AGGRESSION!

Thursday, Jan. 24, 5:00 PM
Meet at Powell & Market in downtown SF
March to Philippine Consulate (447 Sutter @ Powell)

The U.S. has announced the next site of its Terror War...the Philippines' southern island of Mindanao. More than 1,000 armed U.S. troops will be marching on Filipino soil in a war that the Filipino people oppose with regular mass protests all over the nation.

The Filipino people know from firsthand experience that U.S. militarization will only lead to more human rights violations, civilian deaths, environmental destruction and the continued displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. Despite the people's successful efforts to kick out the U.S. military from the archipelago, the Philippine government has once again demonstrated who its true constituents are by allowing them to return without question.

The Filipino masses know that the only solution to terrorism is to address the root causes - poverty, landlessness, joblessness, homelessness - through genuine economic reform, land rights, and a democratic government that truly represents the needs of the majority rather than the few. Taking their lead, it's time to protest this new development right here in the Bay Area.

"We're Gonna Rage Against the Machine... From the Bay all the way to the Philippines!"

More than 200 Filipinos and American solidarity allies massed up at Powell and Market Streets in San Francisco at 5:00 PM January 24, 2002.

The recently formed Filipinos for Global Justice Not War Coalition called for the protest action in response to the entry of more than 660 US combat troops to the Philippines in the last two weeks.

The protesters chanted "We're gonna rage against the machine... from the Bay all the way to the Philippines!" "We Don't Want Another US War of Aggression! Yankee mercenaries Go Home! US Out of the Philippines" With streamers and banners fluttering vigorously in the wind, they marched up Powell Street to Sutter Street where the Philippine Consulate was located.

Activists from the Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines (CHRP), League of Filipino Students (LFS), cultural group Diskarte Namin, GABRIELA Network, Philip Vera Cruz Justice Project marched shoulder to shoulder with members of AnakBayan, Filipino Workers' Association (FWA), First Quarter Storm Movement (FQSM) and the Philippine Information Network Services (PINS).

Scores of Filipinos belonging to student groups from City College of SF and SF State University and Bay Area Filipino community groups joined in enthusiastically as well as did solidarity allies such as the International ANSWER, Workers World Party, RCP, International Socialist Organization (ISO), Committee in Support of the Revolution in Peru (CSRP), African People's Socialist Party (APSP) - Uhuru movement, Workers' Democracy Network (WDN) and several other groups and individuals from the many anti-war coalitions that had sprouted in recent months.

Speaker after speaker vigorously denounced the latest machinations of US imperialism, making the Philippines the next target after Afghanistan. "Imperyalismo, ibagsak! Pyudalismo, ibagsak! Burukrata kapitalismo, ibagsak! GMA mismo, babagsak!" and many other chants resonated throughout that section of downtown San Francisco with occasional approving honks from passing cars. Given the supposedly high approval rating among Americans for Bush's "war on terrorism," surprisingly, the protesters only met few hecklers, if any.

The protest action last night was numerically larger than the rally that met Macapagal-Arroyo in Burlingame last November. A participant noted that the rally was a strong showing of solidarity: truly multi-generational, multisectoral and multinational. As in the Burlingame protest, the action was high-spirited throughout. However, the local Bay Area media did not take as much interest.

As the rally drew to a close, the protesters chanted, "We'll be back!" The next picket was announced for Tuesday February 5, 5 PM again in front of the consulate (447 Suttter St.)--to mark the 103rd anniversary of the start of the Filipino-American War which saw 1.4 million Filipinos perish from 1899-1916 .

The protesters closed the militant but peaceful rally with one loud clap of "'Sangbagsak!" and dispersed at 7:00 PM.
