Students protest at UCLA against the suspension of two pro-Palestinian clubs

by Joshua Rodriguez
On February 18, over 100 students protested the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) administrationโ€™s February 12 decision to suspend two pro-Palestinian clubs from campus, the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine (GSJP).

The interim suspension was in retaliation for a protest organized by the SJP, GSJP and UCLA Rank and File for a Democratic Union (UAW4811) on February 5 which targeted the multi-million dollar home of UC regent Jonathan โ€œJayโ€ Sures.

The suspension will prevent both the SJP and GSJP from reserving space for meetings on campus, applying for student club funding, or affiliating themselves with UCLA, according to the UCLA Office of Student Conduct.

Additional disciplinary action could be levied against the SJP and GSJP once the review of the suspensions are complete.

Sures, who falsely claimed that he was targeted for his Jewish heritage, has consistently conflated protests opposing the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza as synonymous with support for terrorism and Hamas.

The GSJP stated on social media that regent Sures was targeted for protest due to his close affiliation to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)โ€”which has slandered protests demanding a ceasefire as โ€œantisemiticโ€โ€”and his open support for the actions of the Netanyahu regime.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the ADL, which pathetically excused Elon Muskโ€™s fascist Nazi salute during an event celebrating President Donald Trumpโ€™s inauguration as โ€œan โ€˜awkwardโ€™ momentโ€ and โ€œnot a nazi salute,โ€ has supported the suspensions at UCLA, posting on X: โ€œProtesters calling for the elimination of the state of Israel in front of the home of UC Regent Jay Sures is unacceptable. Law enforcement should fully investigate, and prosecutors should be charging those responsible. Our leaders need to put their foot down against such boldfaced bigotry โ€“ before the madness escalates further.โ€

Regent Sures is vice chairman and managing director of the United Talent Agency, which represents and has partnered with the ADL, and serves on the boards of governors for two laboratories that test and develop nuclear weapons for the US.

Sures is also a board member of the Los Angeles Police Foundation, which raises money for the LAPD, the same agency that was called out on February 5 to protect his Brentwood mansion from student protesters.

The February 12 suspension was announced via email, slandering the pro-Palestinian protesters for supposedly inciting antisemitic violence against Sures and his family.

The inflammatory and highly misleading campus-wide email was circulated by newly appointed UC Chancellor Julio Frenk, who began his tenure last month.

โ€œAt UCLA, there is always room for discourse and for passionate debate of different points of viewโ€ฆ,โ€ the email states, but, โ€œWhat there should never be room for is violence.โ€

โ€œNo one should ever fear for their safety. Without the basic feeling of safety, humans cannot learn, teach, work and live - much less thrive and flourish. This is true no matter what group you are a member of - or which identities you hold. There is no place for violence in our Bruin community.โ€ [emphasis in original]

The email concludes:

โ€œAny act of violence undermines the foundation of our university. As a citizen of the world, I know that no one can promise a society free of violence. But as your chancellor, I can commit to you that whenever an act of violence is directed against any member of the university community, UCLA will not turn a blind eye. This is a responsibility I take most seriously.โ€

The hypocritical nature of this slanderous email is apparent to all who witnessed the violent attack by pro-Zionist thugs against anti-genocide student protesters on April 30, 2024, and the UCLA-backed police raid that followed on May 2, which left dozens of students injured, hundreds arrested and many more traumatized.

As of today, out of the mob of pro-Zionist fascists who brutally attacked the peaceful protesters, only one person, a local high school student, has faced any type of lawful repercussions for their actions.

Michael Chwe, a professor of political science who participated in the February 18 protest against the suspension, disagreed with UCLAโ€™s decision to ban the SJP and GSJP and the sanctimonious tone of chancellor Frenkโ€™s email.

โ€œIf you look at who actually experienced violence, itโ€™s overwhelmingly our own students,โ€ Chwe told the Daily Bruin, โ€œand that was the fault of our university administration.โ€

โ€œFor them to be claiming that our students are violent is completely backward.โ€

Graeme Blair, associate professor of political science and a member of UCLAโ€™s Faculty for Justice in Palestine, also called out the hypocritical nature of chancellor Frenkโ€™s email in a written statement to the Daily Bruin.

โ€œJust like in April, administrators today selectively deployed the charge of violence, not against those whose actions cause physical harm, but against those whose speech they dislike,โ€ said Blair.

โ€œChancellor Frenk and the UC regentsโ€™ continuing complicity in genocide is violence. ... To call hanging banners on shrubs violence is a despicable distortion.โ€

The suspensions at UCLA follow similar suspensions waged throughout the UC system against the SJP at UC Santa Cruz, suspended until September 2026, and UC Irvine, suspended until November 2029.

Other suspensions outside of the UC system have occurred at the University of Michigan, George Mason University, Rutgers and George Washington University under the same false pretenses of combating antisemitic violence on college campuses.

The Socialist Equality Party and our youth organization, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality, condemns the suspensions of the SJP and GSJP as well as the slanderous email concocted by chancellor Frenk.

We call on all workers, students and youth to come to their defense and openly defy the attacks on studentโ€™s democratic rights and the demonization of anti-genocide protesters.

by WSWS Gives Union Bureaucrats & Demos A Pass
The WSWS which touts itself as a working class organization but is opposed to working in any unions has now made a statement about the attack by the Zionist administration at UCLA on Palestinian activists and their organizations at UCLA.
While opposing on the attack on these organizations the WSWS ignores the complete capitulation of the UAW 4811, UPTE and AFSCME 3299 union bureaucrats to this administration's attacks. The union leadership have not educated their members about these attacks and refused to mobilize them against these attacks and also connect this battle to their contract struggles. Support for the genocidal Zionist state and the massive funding by the US and UC investments into the genocide.
The "revolutionary" WSWS also forgot to mention that the Democratic Party and governor Gavin Newsom run the university and have supported these attacks and the militarization of UCLA and also conspired to support the violent attack on the encampment. How could the so called "socialists" of the WSWS fail to even mention Newsom and the role of the Democrats? Apparently the Democrats have no responsibility in the growing repression and terror attacks on opponents of the US bi-partisan support for Zionism and the genocide according this outfit.

Without citing a single example, Biden asserted that the mass nationwide peaceful protests by millions of people were violent and antisemitic.

"Destroying property is not a peaceful protest. Itโ€™s against the law, vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations. None of this is a peaceful protest, threatening people, intimidating people. Instilling fear in people is not peaceful protest. Itโ€™s against the law."

In fact, the violence that has taken place has been directed against the protesters.

On Tuesday night, a group of Zionist thugs, armed with clubs and firecrackers, assaulted the encampment when most of the protesters were asleep, while police stood by and gave them free rein.

New York City police carried out similar attacks, arresting nearly 300 students and supporters at Columbia University and City College of New York. There were also mass arrests at Dartmouth, the University of Wisconsin, Portland State University in Oregon and other colleges.

Bidenโ€™s reference to the โ€œcancellation of classes and graduationsโ€ is particularly rich, given that it is administrators who have cancelled classes and graduations as part of the effort to suppress and shut down protests.

While claiming this police crackdown is intended to make American Jews feel โ€œsafe,โ€ it has led to the arrest of hundreds of Jewish people, including Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein.

Regents and UAW bureaucracy seek to contain political rebellion of UC academic workers
https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2024/05/20/fzgt-m20.html
19 May 2024

Last weekโ€™s strike vote across all UC campuses, which passed by 79 percent, reflects a powerful movement that has emerged among rank-and-file academic workers, who are overwhelmingly in favor of bringing their collective economic power to bear to stop the ongoing repression of campus anti-genocide protests by university administrators and police.

This rapidly emerging movement for a political strike is already confronting both the intransigence of the university authorities and the UAW bureaucracy, which is part of the same Democratic Party-dominated political apparatus that includes the Biden administration and the UC Board of Regents.

Despite the overwhelming popular support for an immediate mass strike, the UAW leadership is attempting to contain the strike within the narrowest possible channels using the model of a โ€œstand-up strike,โ€ which was used to break up and betray the struggle of autoworkers for better wages and working conditions last year.

By scheduling an isolated strike of only 2,000 members at a single non-urban campus on Monday, the UAW bureaucracy is refusing to bring the full economic power of the membership to bear, including at campuses such as University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of California Irvine, where the repression of anti-genocide protests has been the most violent.

There are 17,000 undergraduate students at UC Santa Cruz, one of the 10 campuses in the University of California system, out of 233,000 total across all UC campuses.

In contrast to the UAW bureaucracyโ€™s efforts to limit the strike movement of academic workers, the UC Board of Regents has taken the most aggressive positions in response to the strike vote. The Board of Regents is controlled by Californiaโ€™s Democratic Party, presided over by Californiaโ€™s Democratic governor Gavin Newsom, and consisting mostly of his political appointees.
