Emergency Speak-Out At KPFA
July 31, 2024 12:00 pm Emergency Speak-Out At KPFA
KPFA
1929 MLK Blvd
Berkeley
There will be an emergency speakout in front of KPFA on Wednesday July 31, 2024 to protest the attack on KPFA and Pacifica by members of the KPFA Local Station Board. These members who are part of the Protecting KPFA group have filed complaints with the FCC to deny a license to Pacifica Affiliate WBAI. That complaint has led to the FCC putting entire Pacifica under a monitorship and are now engaged in intensive oversight of fundraising of all stations of Pacifica.
This has led to complaints by programmers at KPFA and other stations and as a result of this government intervention KPFA and two other stations have cancelled their summer fund drive despite the deep financial crisis at Pacifica. The cancelling of the fundraising in this dire financial crisis is a threat to KPFA and Pacifica.
This real threat against KPFA and Pacifica because of these complaints to the FCC by members of KPFA's The Protectors group is extremely dangerous since the election of a Trump government and their control of the FCC could lead to the immediate closure of Pacifica using the pretext of these complaints by "KPFA Protectors”. Project 2025, is a fascist program that specifically mentions the need to take action against the Pacifica Foundation.
Speakers will also discuss the refusal of the manager to attend the bi-monthly KPFA Local Station meetings to give reports to the elected Local Station Board which governs the Local Stations. The so called "Protectors" continue to defend their complaints to the FCC about WBAI and their lawsuits pushing to illegally amend the bylaws to eliminate democratic governance and allow them to appoint their cronies from the listeners and the staff.
Rescue Pacifica members, candidates and supporters of KPFA and Pacifica will discuss the threat of fascism and the growing need to build KPFA and Pacifica in this time of great threat to democratic communication rights. They will also discuss the importance of having democratic elections at KPFA with carts of the candidates and live debates on the air of all the candidates. In the past the management has prevented full debates on the air of the candidates and having them prominently linked on the website.
We support KPFA as an activist workers and people's network so it can become a relevant media voice opposing US wars abroad including the genocide in Gaza and and the rise of fascism in the US.
The present KFPA "Protectors" have also voted down a resolution to oppose the genocide by Israel and support by the United States for these war crimes.
