Screening on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran
co-sponsored by the International Emergency Campaign to Free Iran's Political Prisoners Now

The government of Iran forcibly conscripts all young men and then orders some to execute political prisoners. There is No Evil, by director Mohammad Rasoulof, filmed in secret and banned in Iran, vividly brings out the moral agony of young soldiers required to execute, and the lifelong consequences to those who go along - and those who don’t. This deep and moving film exposes Iran’s fundamentalist theocracy, and powerfully poses the universal moral bankruptcy of “I was only following orders”.

On June 20, the International Day in Support of Political Prisoners in Iran, Revolution Books is proud to screen There is No Evil. The fascist Islamic theocracy in Iran incarcerates thousands of prisoners, including political prisoners who are subject to torture – it executed at least 853 people in 2023 - 74% of all executions in the world. At the Cannes film Festival last month Rasoulof spoke out, joining the urgent international battle to save the life of Toomaj Salehi, a revolutionary rapper who has been imprisoned for his rebel music, powerful support for the Women, Life, Freedom movement, and has now been sentenced to execution.

This important film digs into choices which are profoundly posed right now. Yes, posed in Iran, with its savage repression against its people; posed in Palestine to all who excuse the great crimes committed by Israel; posed as well to everyone in the USA where this government murders, tortures, bombs, exploits and destroys people all over the planet. Is complicity and going along in silence acceptable? Or is it reprehensible? Who will stand up – and who will confront what it means to put an end to this?
