Molech in the Machine
Why is AI so scary?
AI? The Problem is Still Us Humans
Machine Learning. Allowing machines to decide, to adjust and to learn - this is the thing we now call AI - artificial intelligence. It has become a new scary specter. But why? What is so scary about it?
In the 1960's at the Rand Corporation, David Baran developed an "adaptive system." Packets of information could move out on their own and choose the quickest route to the next node, On Their OWN! Baran's packet-switched data network.
This network, is as much a part of the evolving AI as is any one server farm, or string of code written by Sam Altman or Elon Musk.
Allowing the greedy psychopaths among us to harness this - this is the real danger of AI. The threat is us. We are the Molech in the Machine. The new digital Frankenstein is so scary because it is made out of us.
