Chaos as Street Artists displaced by Sale of Public Sidewalk to Vendors in Santa Cruz

by The Jones/Skelton Report
Chaos unfolds as Santa Cruz and Global artists Alex Skelton and Joff Jones are confronted by territorial vendors, police officers, and more new regulations which see large areas of Pacific Avenue made exclusive and privatized by a new permitting system where certain individuals are apparently granted exclusive use of our Public Sidewalk if they pay money to the City.

New regulations downtown which see large areas of Pacific Avenue made exclusive and privatized for commercial individuals using the Public Sidewalk space has caused artists, musicians, and street performers exercising their basic human rights of free speech, gathering, and connection to be displaced and aggressively confronted by vendors who now claim exclusive domain over these downtown PUBLIC areas, as the attached video from last Saturday morning (3/16/24) on Pacific Avenue documents.

This guy (alex) is completely insane!
We have been downtown many times visiting the vendors and enjoy the scene.
The beautiful community painting is wonderful! But this guy Alex has a very confrontational attitude,
He has also cut and shaped this video ! I know the vendor who he was referring , her and her husband make all sorts of hand made wire jewelry, earrings , and other items ! That is also referred as Art !!!
So for him to classify all vendors as being commercial? How about they are permitted vendors who pay to have an organized event! I feel bad for all the time they wasted. The last few minutes of video definitely shows a great organized strip of booths with friendly vendors! I don’t understand why (Alex) can’t just follow the permit process! Seems like it would be easier than all this mess .

He never stopped talking !!!!!!
