Redbird's 28th Annual Blanket Drive and Mini-Powwow to take place rain or shine at the Simi Valley Public Library

Native American cultural gathering seeks new, washable blankets and monetary donations to ship them to South Dakota.

December 2, 2023, 11 AM - 4 PM
Simi Valley Library, 2969 Tapo Canyon Road, Simi Valley, CA 93063

Everyone is welcome to this family friendly gathering of indigenous people. Native American singers, drummers, dancers, flute players and story tellers share their songs, steps and stories in support of this long-standing gathering, which collects new blankets and sends them to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota.

For many years, Alex White Plume (former vice president and president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Reservation) has served as Redbird's liaison in this effort, ensuring that blankets, warm winter clothing, gloves, baby items and the like make it to families who need them, and families who live in remote regions of the reservation.

The involvement of the White Plume family creates an important energetic transformation. Many Lakota call Alex Leksi, meaning uncle, a beloved relation, an honored relative. The blankets Redbird sends to Alex are given as gifts, not charity. They are coming from a relative. They are given in a good way.

For those giving the blankets, and donating the money to ship them, a blanket is a gift of love and caring. A blanket provides warmth and comfort. A blanket is held close to the body. A blanket embraces. We believe that to offer such a gift to someone whom you may never know is to express unconditional love.

If you are unable to attend the gathering but would like to make a contribution for shipping, you can do so securely on Redbird's website:
https://www.redbirdsvisions.org/donate---get-involved.html
(donations made to the Children of Many Colors Powwow in the months of November and December will automatically be used for the blanket drive) or by mail to Redbird, P.O. Box 702, Simi Valley, CA 93062
