In support of SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike

by Lynda Carson (newzland2 [at] gmail.com)
Photo from my Rob Nilsson collection of the Nine @ Night Summer Bash with local filmmaker Rob Nilsson, and the Tenderloin Action Group / Tenderloin yGroup on August 23, back around 1998?, at Battery Chamberlain at Baker Beach in San Francisco for a cookout. According to the flyer I have, it cost $10 per person to cover food, etc… by check or cash payable to Bridgette Burch, Master Chef. That’s me (Lynda Carson) in the photo, on the very far right side of the photo in a black sweater, light green top, and blue jeans looking to my left.

In support of SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike

By Lynda Carson - August 1, 2023

Oakland - As an individual, I am wholly in support of the strike by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild of America (WGA), and hope the striker’s demands are met as soon as possible. The local SAG-AFTRA website for San Francisco and Northern California, may be found by clicking here.

According to the website for SAG-AFTRA, “On July 13, the SAG-AFTRA National Board voted unanimously to issue a strike order against the studios and streamers. This historic decision was made after the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, or AMPTP, failed to reach a deal that adequately addressed the issues most important to the union's members, including provisions for economic stability and streaming revenue, and protections against the proliferation of artificial intelligence.”

Rob Nilsson’s Tenderloin Action Group, A Drama Actors Group:

Years ago during 1998 and before that, I was a member of local filmmaker, director and actor Rob Nilsson’s actors group called the Tenderloin Action Group. It was later renamed the Tenderloin yGroup, co-founded by filmmaker Rob Nilsson. Click here for a YouTube link to the Tenderloin Action Group.

During 1998, and before, in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco the drama actors group called the Tenderloin Action Group used to meet in a room on Wednesday evenings on the second floor of the Golden Gate YMCA. This was a haven away from the noise, energy, and confusion of the streets.

The drama actors group would vary in size from week to week, and people from all walks of life were welcome to join, for a session of meditation and raising artistic expression to a whole new level. There was no charge to the participants, but donations were welcome.

Reportedly, “volunteer filmmakers, local residents, and the recently homeless (unhoused) would gather weekly for the free workshop that trained participants in film acting, while focusing on an emphasis of personal empowerment, and emotional accessibility.”

The Tenderloin Action Group meeting at the Golden Gate YMCA would to start out by laying down on the floor of the room and meditate for a while, to try to relax, forget about their worries, and tune in to the moment.

After the group meditation session, filmmaker Rob Nilsson and the drama actors group would grab some folding chairs to sit on, and they would form a circle in the room from a group of 12 participants or more, depending on the evening and how many participants appeared for the drama actors improv session.

Then as an example of an exercise during the drama actors session, Rob would pick out a member of the group, and have them stand in the center of the circle. Rob may then ask the person in the circle to take on the role of a fallen man or woman who has “betrayed” himself or herself, and everyone they love. The person in the circle would then do their best at the moment to do an improv act of telling the group how they “betrayed their self,” while 2 camera operators would be recording the improv acting exercise. If the improv session in the circle went well, and was successful, Rob might tell the participant, “I believe that we just saw another level of you that we haven’t seen before.” Often the improv sessions in the circle were intense, very emotional, and in advance one would never know who Rob would pick to stand in the circle, or what type of a role or character that he would want the participant to act during the improve sessions.

Often after the weekly improv acting sessions occurred at the Golden Gate YMCA, Rob Nilsson, myself, and other members of the Tenderloin Action Group would go to Lefty O’Douls in San Francisco for some nourishment, conversation, and friendship.

I used to love being a part of the Tenderloin Action Group while hanging out with Rob Nilsson, and other members of the actors group including Gabriella Maltz Larkin. Back in November of 2001, Gabriella Maltz Larkin and her son Adan Faudoa joined me and others one evening years ago for a rally in support of the “rights of Oakland tenants”, in front of the Oakland City Hall.

The grandfather of Gabriella Maltz Larkin who’s name was Albert Maltz was part of The Hollywood Ten, and was blacklisted by The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) years ago. Though blacklisted, Albert Maltz was a screen writer for many great films including the film Broken Arrow with James Stewart, and The Robe with Richard Burton, Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, and Michael Rennie.

Because of my experience numerous years while I was a part of the Tenderloin Action Group (drama actors group) many years ago, this is why I am wholly in support of the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, and hope that all of their demands are met as soon as possible.

Rob Nilsson, the film Chalk and the Tenderloin Action Group:

Years ago, Rob Nilsson joined longtime collaborator Don Bajema to write a screenplay featuring characters designed for specific Tenderloin Action Group (TAG) members. They made a film titled Chalk released in 1996, which was shot over a four year period with a volunteer crew, and was financed by personal donations and and Bay Area billiard clubs. I saw Chalk back in 1996 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco.

Since then, Rob Nilsson has directed many other films through the years.

The Y Not Quarterly Publication:

Rob’s film actors group used to put out a publication quarterly during 2003 and before called the Y Not Quarterly. During the Spring-Summer Issue of 2003, it marked the first anniversary of the Y Not Quarterly. The managing editor was Pat Wallace. Contributing writers included Rob Nilsson, Constance Taylor, Irit Levi, and Pat Wallace. The editorial consultant was Gabriella Maltz Larkin.

The contents of the 2003, Spring-Summer issue of the Y Not Quarterly included the Mail Pouch - Lynda Carson, tenant activist, reveals the personal risk of going up against the system on Page 3.

Photo of filmmaker Rob Nilsson and Lynda Carson one evening in June of 1998, at Nancy Hayes Casting Agency https://www.hayescasting.com/ , back when it was called Hayes and Van Horn Casting, at 1515 Vallejo Street, in San Francisco.

Along with the Tenderloin Action Group, we were celebrating the premiere of a film Rob Nilsson directed called A Town Has Turned To Dust https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162016/ , that premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel that evening. We all gathered in various rooms at the casting agency that had large TV screens and food and drinks for us, as watched, and celebrated the release of Rob's film called A Town Has Turned To Dust on the Sci-Fi Channel.

Afterwards, a bunch of us with Rob Nilsson, including myself, went to the Golden Gate Pool Hall to play pool, and party until around 3-4 in the morning. We had a lot of fun that evening.

August 3 reply from my friend and filmmaker Rob Nilsson

August 3, 2023

I sent the above story to my friend and filmmaker Rob Nilsson, and received a reply by email from him a little earlier today. I normally would not share my emails that I receive from my friend Rob Nilsson, but for this story and for historical reasons, I believe that Rob may not mind that I am sharing part of the email with the readers.

In part it read, “Thank you so much for this remembrance of what we did back then.  I was especially touched by your inclusion of pix and names of many of the participants.  Lots of good
memories there.  In 2019 we showed CHALK at the Metrograph (In New York) and finally got the review that film deserved.  You can find it on the internet under Film Comment review Chalk.”

Many years ago in 1996, I saw the film Chalk https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115859/ involving members of the the Tenderloin Action Group including my old friend Edwin Johnson (who passed away unfortunately), which was directed by Rob Nilsson at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. Myself, with many others from the Tenderloin Action Group that evening, including filmmaker Rob Nilsson appeared at the Castro Theater to see the film Chalk.

It was a very exciting evening to see the film Chalk on the big screen, while hanging out with Rob, and the Tenderloin Action Group. Like Rob, and others, I have many good memories from those days, and am happy to share them in this story with some pix.

For the record, I dug up an old article from the SF Gate about films in a Cinematic Grab Bag, which reveals that the film Chalk played at the Castro Theater on April 19, 1996. The years have gone by so fast... See link below...

Rare images of Rob Nilsson and Tenderloin Action Group

By Lynda Carson - August 5, 2023

These are some rare images from my Rob Nilsson collection, taken from inside the San Francisco Examiner Magazine in September of 2000. These are images that may have not been seen by the public for the last 23 years. Time passes by so fast.

Rob Nilsson is known as a “maverick filmmaker” who worked with many people who were not trained actors from Hollywood, and some of them were homeless people from the streets of the Tenderloin.

Among those in the photos, they include filmmaker Rob Nilsson, actors Corey Duval, Edwin Johnson in glasses wearing a beret, and others from the Tenderloin Action Group / Tenderloin yGroup who have been in a series of Rob’s “9 @ Night Films,” while they were headquartered at the Golden Gate YMCA in the Tenderloin for their improv acting sessions, weekly on Wednesday nights. It was later that Rob Nilsson’s improv actors group workshop moved from the Golden Gate YMCA, to the Faithful Fools Street Ministry back around 2001.

More about Rob’s Tenderloin Action Group / Tenderloin yGroup at the Faithful Fools Street Ministry may be found by clicking here.

The night Sean Penn and Lars Ulrich spent an evening with Rob, and the Tenderloin Action group / Tenderloin yGroup

Leading up to the evening that Sean Penn and Lars Ulrich (drummer of Metallica), joined Rob and the Tenderloin Action Group / Tenderloin yGroup for an evening, “A day before SCHEME C6 played at the Rafael Film Center, Rob and Cory Duval were making the rounds to make sure that their brochures were layed out, and that all was set for the October 12, screening of SCHEME C6, at the theatre. During this moment, a Tribute at the theatre to Malcom McDowell (clockwork orange/Stanley Kubrick fame) was letting out, and Rob ran into his friend Peter Coyote. Apparently, Peter Coyote told Rob and Cory that he wanted to introduce a friend of his, and that turned out to be Sean Penn, who happens to be a fan of Cassevettes Films. After a chat for a bit, Sean Penn stated that he would return a day later to check out the film SCHEME C6, which happens to be a Cassevettes-like film. He kept his word, and the following night he brought along his friend Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica, to watch the film SCHEME C6 unfold onto the silver screen before them.

For Rob, Cory, Monica, Mc Mars, Gabriela, Kevin, and all the others that worked on this production, it was a high night emotionally to find that they had the recognition and respect of Penn and Ulrich joining them afterwards for some food, drink, and a chance to get to know one another. Many of the group sitting at the table's within the Broken Drum were excited by the film which culminated in the nights gathering, and Cory Duval found himself sitting with Lars Ulrich who was telling him how much he liked the film, and who was asking Cory, how long has he been an actor, and other questions. As a kid, Cory
loved the band Metallica, and had the songs memorized in his mind, he says.”

According to Wikipedia, “The 9 @ Night Film Cycle is a cinematic epic of nine feature films about 40-50 fictional characters living on the rough edges of American society. Consisting of fourteen and a half hours of film shot over the course of fourteen years, all films were produced with members of the Tenderloin Action Group (1992–97), and the Tenderloin yGroup, (1998-2009). Each film takes a unique aesthetic approach to its subject, and all nine films depict a world of the homeless, recently homeless, and inner city residents, played by workshop members, local actors and established talents such as Robert Viharo and Ron Perlman..”

Cine Manifest

Cine Manifest was a San Francisco, Marxist film collective from the 70's, including filmmaker Rob Nilsson and Eugene Corr, Peter Gessner, John Hanson, Stephen Lighthill, Steve Wax with Judy Irola, and for historical reasons it should be noted.

For those of you who did not know, Rob Nilsson was a member of Cine Manifest before he created his film actors workshops known as the Tenderloin Action Group / Tenderloin yGroup.

After Cine Manifest, A Marxist Film Collective

By Lynda Carson

As of today August 20, 2023, the Sag-Aftra and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike is still an on-going concern, and has not ended yet. I am in support of the strike, and am very concerned that so many people are being harmed in the process of the strike. (LC)

After Cine Manifest, A Marxist Film Collective

For historical reasons, it should be noted that after filmmaker Rob Nilsson's activities with Cine Manifest, A Marxist Film Collective came to pass years ago, some links from my Rob Nilsson collection to an old website that I archived back in 2001, is now available for your viewing pleasure.

People have not seen this archived website for many years, that was eventually replaced by Rob's newer website called Citizen Cinema https://www.robnilsson.net/ .

A comparison of the two websites helps the viewers to see how Rob has expanded his horizons into the world of filmmaking, and actors, through the years.

For historical reasons I believe that the following links from my Rob Nilsson collection may be of interest.

A Wrap: More rare images of Rob Nilsson's Tenderloin Action Group/Tenderloin yGroup

By Lynda Carson - August 22, 2023 (See rare images further below)

Earlier today, I was glad to see the strike in front of Netflix on the news today, and I hope the SAG-AFTRA and writers guild striker’s demands are met immediately!

Below are some older rare images of Rob Nilsson’s activities with the Tenderloin Action Group/Tenderloin yGroup to wrap things up.

But first, an older message from Tenderloin yGroup participants Destiny Costa, Gabriela Maltz Larkin, and Edwin Johnson about their participation as actors in Rob’s films.

Apparently, my wonderful experiences with Rob Nilsson and the film actors group (TAG) has allowed me to travel many years through time and space into the future to share these rare images, and story with you inspired from my Rob Nilsson collection that I saved through the years.

I can only hope that this has been enjoyable to the readers, and that in some small way that this sheds some light on the beauty of Rob Nilsson, and his wonderful activities in the world of film, and art. Thank you Rob!!!

Once again, I support the SAG-AFTRA Actors and Writers Guild of America in their strike and demands, and hope this story helps to shed a little light on the world of actors, and the films that bring so much joy into our lives.

I have never been in a film, but I have been in 2 music videos back in 1982, that aired many times on the Storer Cable TV Network and TV stations in Arizona. Myself and a few friends had our own half hour show on TV called Vusic (Video Music), that aired 5 times a week for well over a year. We filmed local musicians playing in bars and venues in the Phoenix area, and played the performance music videos on our TV show. Exciting times…..

In support of musicians affected by SAG-AFTRA actors / writers strike

By Lynda Carson

Years ago, as a graduate of the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery https://roberto-venn.com/ , I used to work in Hollywood repairing guitars and stringed instruments https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2020/01/02/18829401.php for rock stars, professional and studio musicians. As a result of my experiences in the music industry, I wish to offer my spiritual support to all the studio and professional musicians being negatively affected by the SAG-AFTRA actors / writers strike. I hope the strikers demands are met as soon as possible, so the professional musicians can get back to work performing the soundtracks for all the movies that we love.

For those who may be interested in hearing some of my original eclectic solo acoustic guitar music (recorded in 2021), just click on one of the links below.

When the page finally opens up, and stops moving around, click on the small triangle at the bottom of the page, and the music will start playing. The music is my own original music with no sound effects, or over dubs. Just me and an acoustic guitar...

Update: KALX invitation to play my music in studio?

A week after I posted some links to my music (see above) and sent them to KALX radio station https://www.kalx.berkeley.edu/ in Berkeley in the above story in support of the SAG-AFTRA / writers guild strike, I heard back from Claudia Peri, a DJ at KALX.

Claudia invited me to play my eclectic solo acoustic guitar music in their studio on September 16 for the airwaves / listeners, and for me to be interviewed by her afterwards. I felt honored. Claudia obviously has good taste in music.... Thank you Claudia!

However, unfortunately I had to decline the invitation due to health issues and concerns over catching the covid virus that has a huge uptick in people catching the virus lately.... What a world.

But I did suggest that we do a phone interview on September 16, and suggested that she could play some of my music on air along with the phone interview.

Sorry to say, I did not hear back from Claudia about my phone interview suggestion, but I have been hoping for the best.

Regardless of what happens, I hope that Claudia and other DJ's of KALX, and other radio stations feel free to play my music on the air waves. I started listening to KALX https://www.kalx.berkeley.edu/ many, many years ago in the 90s, and loved to hear them say that KALX is the coolest station in the nation!

See email below from Claudia Peri.

Hello Lynda,
My name is Claudia Peri, I'm a DJ at KALX Berkeley and I'm active in both the music and special events departments. I have listened to your music from some publicity emails you've sent me, would be interested in having you over to our station for a live show! Our program is called KALX Live, and it happens every Saturday from 9 to midnight. Usually performances start at about 9:30 in our studio inside the UC Berkeley Social Sciences building followed by an in-studio interview. Currently, my available date is September 16, as those are the dates I am hosting. Please respond ASAP if you are interested, the show date is coming up quickly but we will have your show set up and would love to have you on our station!

Thank you so much in advance,
-Claudia Peri (KALX Berkeley)
