SF Supes in Nov. met 16 hrs; 4 hrs for "political masturbation"

by Michael Petrelis
How much time do Supervisors waste on commendations and roll call introductions?

The Board of Supervisors in November met on Tuesdays for a total of 16 hours and 15 minutes, in my estimation, after reviewing SF GovTV recordings and timing how long they spoke during Recognition of Commendations and Roll Call Introductions.

The supervisors stopped the meetings for 264 minutes, which is 4 hours and 30 minutes, to engage in what I label political masturbation. They give out proclamations, make long-winded speeches, honor constituents, come from behind their railing into the audience to strike a pose for cameras, and massage a lot of egos including their own.

I'm not opposed at all to saluting voters and issuing proclamations, and suggest the supervisors schedule a separate public monthly meeting for commendations and memorials.

With innumerable social ills needing their attention, and delivering some solutions dammit, I want every Tuesday meeting of the board to be fully devoted to governing. Give out the flowers another time.

Let's go over the stats:

Nov. 1: Met for 3 hours, 35 minutes. Political masturbation, 1 hour 7 minutes.

Nov. 8: Met for 2 hours, 5 minutes. Political masturbation, 48 minutes.

Nov. 15: 7 hours, 10 minutes. Political masturbation, 1 hour, 36 minutes.

Nov. 29: 4 hours, 10 minutes. Political masturbation, 53 minutes.
