2022 Sacramento Kwanzaa - Kinara Workshops to kickoff the season
The essential central symbol of Kwanzaa is the kinera. 7 days, 7 symbols and 7 principles is our unique “California Grown” Pan African Global Holiday.
Kids can learn how to make a kinara craft using paper, to celebrate Kwanzaa.
Kwanzaa is a based upon utilizing several traditional African Harvest Festivals in a special way for a special time of the year.
The word kwanza is Swahili for “the first fruit of the harvest.”
Kwanzaa is a 7 day festival that begins on the 26th of December and it celebrates the ties that bind traditional African customs to the cultural history of African American and our Pan African Diaspora.
Everyone can make a Kinara (a seven branch candleholder) as a way of making the season personal celebrating Kwanzaa year round.
The seven principles of Kwanzaa are represented with candles (one black, three red – on the right, three green – on the left.)
Each day a principle is discussed and reflected upon with examples of a yearlong journey.
Come experience making a kinara and discovering a deeper meaning of “Matunda Ya Kwanzaa.”
Principles off Kwanzaa
In Swahili – Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamma, Nia, Kuumba and Imani.
In English – Unity, Self-Determination, Cooperation, Sharing, Purpose, Creativity and Faith
