A hacker's collective leaked the spy files of Mexico's Ministry of Defense, revealing spying on the Zapatistas and their supporters during the Journey for Life in Europe in 2021. The spy files include Mexico's targeting of powerful Indigenous women, Yaqui in Vicam, and Indigenous movement leaders in Mexico.

Tomas Rojo, spokesman for the Vicam water protectors, was kidnapped on May 27, 2021, brutally murdered and buried in the desert at Vicam. Rojo's assassination follows the resistance to the Independence aqueduct and theft of Yaqui River water, highway blockades on a major highway at Vicam, and the international water forums hosted in the community.
