Makeda Best, editor of Devour the Land: War and American Landscape Photography since 1970, in conversation with Erin O’Toole, associate curator of photography at SFMOMA.
Introduction by Sandra S. Phillips, Curator Emeritus of Photography at SFMOMA.
Devour the Land is the catalog from the eponymous exhibition at The Harvard Art Museums which was curated by Dr. Best.
Devour the Land explored the impacts of military activity on the American landscape—and the ways in which photography supports activism in response to these effects
. Featuring approximately 160 photographs across 6 thematic groupings, the exhibition revealed the nationwide footprint of the U.S. military, the wide network of industries that support and supply its work, and the impacts of—and responses to—this activity.
Makeda Best is the Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography and Interim Division Head, Division of Modern and Contemporary Art, at the Harvard Art Museums. She also teaches courses in photographic history and theory at Harvard University. She holds an MFA from Cal Arts in Studio Photography and a PhD from Harvard University. Her scholarly interests focus on American photography, with a particular focus on photojournalism, documentary, war photography, and text and image works. Her forthcoming book, Where I am from is about ecology, histories of photography, and the African American experience in San Francisco.
