At the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom gathering at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave one of his most remarkable speeches: "Give us the Ballot."
That was in 1957.
Now 65 years later, Washington D.C. continues to be the backdrop for the fight for voting rights. U.S Senate Republicans have repeatedly blocked Voting Rights legislation, including the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which is aimed at fighting voter suppression and updating key parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Despite the obstruction, Democrats have vowed to keep fighting. But to win this fight, it’ll take more than elected officials and lobbyists. Individuals in communities across the country will have to join the struggle, with the chorus:
Give us the ballot!
PANELISTS:
--Moderator: Christopher "Flood The Drummer" Norris, WHYY’s Managing Editor for Community & Engagement.
--Abu Edwards, Millennials in Action
--Rev. Gregory Holston, Itinerant Pastor United Methodist Church
--Brittany Smalls, One PA.
--Saj “Purple” Blackwell, Blackwell Cultural Alliance.
