Press Conference

KPFA Candidates Speak-Out

Tuesday August 17, 2021 4PM PST
KPFA Station
1929 MLK Blvd,
Berkeley

The election for the KPFA local station board is now taking place yet the manager of KPFA, Quincy McCoy is refusing to play the debates of the candidates on the KPFA airwaves. Debates have laready taken place but the members and listeners won’t be hearing them. The membership and listeners of KPFA should have the right to hear the canddates before the vote at KPFA yet the management wants to prevent that.

This is not the first time that the management of KPFA of prevented the listeners from hearing the election issues.

During the election on the bylaws there was only one debate during the election and this was not replayed or publicized at KPFA. So much for democracy at KPFA which has become more and more corporatized with a top down autocratic management.

The management has also refused to let the listeners know that that previous bylaw election was lost by two to one vote even though the Pacifica Interim Executive Director had said that they should play a cart reporting the results of the election to the membership. This contempt for democracy and transparency Isi the calling card of the manager and needs to be challenged.

What kind of free speech radio at KPFA when the management refuses to allow the membership to have the election issues on the air?

If the station doesn't give equal representation to all candidates by airing the statements and forums, then the winners are likely to be the ones who have the most money to spend — as happens in municipal, state and national elections which are dominated from behind the scenes by huge funders.

This is also the case where the "New Day" and "Protectors" grouping have spent over $100,000 in emails and postcards to push the corporate bylaws that would eliminate the power of Local Station Boards. Who is providing this massive amount of money for destroying Pacifica? They refuse to say who their big financial backers are.

Many of the programmers on KPFA talk about the need to defend democracy but doesn’t that start at home?

Call the Manager at KPFA to demand that the election debates be on the air before the ballots go out.

§Big Money Is Being Used To Take Over KPFA & Pacifica

Over $100,000 and highly paid corporate PR handlers have pushed a campaign to put in new top down bylaws twice in less in a year. Now the management at KPFA are preventing the debates of the Local Station Board Candidates to be on the air so the listeners can hear different points of view about what to do at KPFA and Pacifica.
This continues the practice of management and their supporters in the News Department preventing even the report of the previous bylaw election from being reported on the air to the membership. This is part and parcel of the dangers of the corporatization of Pacifica. The supporters of "New Day" also refused to report where their funding was coming from.
