Throughout this whole year in regards to the Coronavirus outbreak, it is reasonable that people take precautionary measures when it comes to their health and safety. How were the inmates of Sonoma County Jail secured and defended against this virus, how well has the system been maintaining the safety of inmates that are unable to protect themselves?
It was reported in the late months of last year that there were a handful of cases regarding the appearance of Covid within the Sonoma County Jail system. These cases infected not only the inmates but as well the on-duty guards. “The rate in the community ticks up and people being arrested come in, so that’s going to tick up the numbers,” Engram 111 Jail administrators took some precautions in the form of continuous testing and isolation amongst guards and inmates. By testing incoming inmates and isolating those who were already affected by the virus. The sign-in sheets and medical results were the main cautionary measures Sonoma County relied on since it helped them keep track and detected any threat towards its jail system.
Their first and main course of action was to test and detect those who have been infected and isolate them from the rest. While doing so Health Officials and Sonoma County Jail worked well together and through it, they created new protective measures for both inmates and guards. Changes included, “Mandatory mask-wearing by inmates and staff, Surveillance testing, Air filtration, Surface disinfection, Reduced interaction between inmates and Significantly reduced visitation.” (These measures and precautions are the right path for inmates and guards, as well as a better systematic system for Sonoma County Jail.
Throughout the evidence is unseeable, we failed inmates in their health and safety from Covid infecting them. Yet it is shown and proven the systematic differences the Sonoma County Jail system has taken into recovering those who are unable to protect themselves, in this case their inmates and the guards on duty.
